At best, if you make the two XPs, your way gives you a tie and a chance to play an overtime where you’re not even going to be favored to win. At best, you have to make two XPs to give yourself something like a 40% chance of winning? Your way is the safer option, if your goal is just to extend the game. As for actually winning, it obviously all comes back to the three major variables — how likely you are to make the XP + how likely you are to make the 2-point + how likely you are to win in OT — but there are pretty obviously numerous scenarios in which those variables will resolve in favor of what Rivera did. Which is the point. You don’t have to agree it was the right way to optimize your chances of winning under all those circumstances. That’s open for debate. It’s the attitude some have that it was baseless or mindless or inexplicable. That’s just dead wrong, and there’s no other way to slice it.
