Yeah, Vance Joseph is one of those, I do what I do no matter what, kind of coordinators. He blitzes a ton, one of the highest and most consistent blitz rates over the past few years, and he doesn't really care that that's not the way to at least try to stop Mahomes and other great young QBs right now, so he blitzed a ton. He does what he does, and that's it. I'd expect their D to struggle against Herbert later this year as well, for similar reasons.

It isn't blitzing, but a similar concept is why we just destroyed the Raiders last year, even at the end of that patch where the offense struggled in a relative sense. Is because Gus Bradley is that my scheme is my scheme, kind of coach, who really just doesn't care about adjusting to the opposition. Leslie Frazier put out a model of how you might be able to stop QBs like Mahomes early last year, and the Raiders just ignored it. Granted, Mahomes clearly developed as the season went on, and it wasn't quite that easy by season's end, obviously. But still, Gus Bradley just ignored every known trend at the time about defending our offense. It was hilarious.

Lol this made me think about the Patriots playoff game in 2018 where Gus Bradley ran nothing but cover-3 against... Brady.

Charger fans - what's up with Big Mike? Is he done, or is he still worth worrying about?

Nah I'm not worried. Mike Williams has always been the type of player to disappear completely in some games, and then go off in others. He has had some big games against KC, so hopefully he gives us another tonight.

Can’t get Twitter to work, so here’s a copy/paste from the Chiefs:

Quote

Due to the large crowd already on-site for tonight’s game, we are opening the parking gates an hour early at 1:30 pm to alleviate traffic concerns on the highways and streets around the complex!

Sounds like the tailgating and game are gonna be lit.

OK, super corny on Jackson's part, but whatevs.

I'll gladly recant if KC wins, but given how tough the Chargers have played KC before they addressed the D in a big way this year, I have to side with the Chargers.

Obviously it can go sideways if the crowd noise, and the TO game goes KC's way.   I think this is a great litmus test for where the Chargers want to be - you have to win in Arrowhead to be the king.   The Chargers did it last year, but obviously they're not going to be surprising the Chiefs with much different.  Both teams know each other well.

Matchups I'm looking at:

-KC's pass rush vs. LAC's upgraded OL - the big Q is still RT, but their moves last year with C and now with G really have the Chargers way better than they were last year.  At the same time, adding Chandler Jones Carlos Dunlap to join Chris Jones & co, well that's quite the pass rush.

-LAC's pass rush vs. KC's strong OL - the KC OL, especially on the inside, is excellent.   The Chargers' Mack & Bosa show, though - it's also quite a juggernaut.  Trench warfare when each team passes are going to be key.

-Travis Kelce vs. Derwin James - ppl routinely point to Kelce's numbers vs. LAC, but there's context.   Before he went out, James gave Kelce far more problems - Kelce feasted when he left.   I do recall in the 1st game last year, Kelce got 100+, but as I recall, the Chargers had jumped to a big lead, and then played softer coverage later on.    That part I'm not 100 percent on - but either way, a healthy Kelce vs. James is something I'm looking forward to watching.

-Josh Palmer vs. the RCB - with OJ McDuffie out, there's going to be a matchup to exploit.  I thought Palmer might take the Allen role, but he may in fact stay on the right side and then match up.   Sometimes it might be Mike Williams, but if there's one area to attack on KC's pass D,  seems like the one.

-Special teams - normally KC will outshine any opponent, and LAC is perennially awful.  But it's a new year, and this time, Butker is out.   Should be a key matchup.

-Joe Lombardi's aggression, Brandon Staley's game management - Lombardi admitted he left off the gas way too soon last week trying to protect a 2-score lead.  He can't do that here.  On a similar note - Staley's advanced metric-based game management gave his team an edge overall - now that his D is much improved, it's interesting to see if he remains as aggressive, because he was pretty conventional last week.

-TO winner - as usual, this often swings the game.    Wouldn't think it's any different with the talent gap between both teams being microscopic.

I'll call a 27-24 LAC W, but really, it should be a banger either way.

The Chiefs actually added Carlos Dunlap, not Chandler Jones
