How Are Those Rookies Doing?

Recommended Posts

Couldnt find a thread, but how are your favorite teams rookies doing? Are they starting, playing well, or disappointing?

CHIEFS:

1a) Trent McDuffie CB - Was playing phenomenally untill his hamstring injury because of AZs ishy turf Field.  hes out at least 4 weeks

1b) George Karlaftis DE - Very solid week one debut, started the game and had a handful of pressures. Fits right in  with the Defense having fun with Chris Jones out there

2a) Skyy Moore WR - rotational piece, had a 30 yard catch and run, a handful of ok returns

2b) Bryan Cook S - been solid so far, good tackler. 3rd safety/special teamer for now

3) Leo Chenal LB - Started, but wasnt a regular piece of the defense. Hes been ok so far, Spagz runs a complicated scheme

4) Joshua Williams CB - Hes super athletic but cant get his head turned around to save his life. Depth only until he can get some seasoning to hopefully fix that.

5) Darian Kinnard OT - Barely made the team honestly, needs serious footwork coaching.

7A) Jaylen Watson CB - solid through preseason, and is likely getting the start in primetime. GL rookie

7b)Isaih Pacheco RB - Been the talk of the offseason, Chiefs are super high on him. Fast, returner, solid in committe, beating out Rojo for snaps.

7c))Nazeeh Johnson CB- Backend/special teamer/gameday inactive. Normal 7th rounder

  • Round 1: No. 4 – Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati
    • 34 coverage snaps, 1 catch allowed (8 yards), 1 BIG forced incompletion.
  • Round 1: No. 10 (from SEA) – Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State
    • Didn't play much, but flashed on an almost 3rd down conversion. (twitter link). He needs to be on the field way more.
  • Round 1: No. 26 (from TEN) – Jermaine Johnson II, DE, Florida State
    • 0.5 sacks, 1 pressure. Hopefully he becomes a solid EDGE for us.
  • Round 2: No. 36 (from NYG) – Breece Hall, RB, Iowa State
    • 6 carries, 23 yards, 1 fumble. He's going to be playing a lot so he'll get his chance to shine.
  • Round 3: No. 101 (from NO via PHI and TEN) – Jeremy Ruckert, TE, Ohio State
    • Healthy scratch
  • Round 4: No. 111 (from CAR) – Max Mitchell, OT, Louisiana
    • Starting at RT because everyone else is injured, but he wasn't the worst on our OL last game.
  • Round 4: No. 117 (from MIN) – Michael Clemons, DE, Texas A&M
    • Rotational DE

Quay Walker has been all over the field, was leading in tackles before dinging up his shoulder and missed the rest of the game. Has had buzz throughout camp and looks fast.

Devonte Wyatt had a quiet camp but logged 12 snaps behind 3 really talented DTs ahead of him on the depth chart.

Christian Watson had a forgettable first NFL target, but he was frequently open throughout the game. He missed all of preseason with a minor knee surgery.

Sean Ryhan has been cheeks. Likely made the team on draft status as he wasn't in our top 10 performers in PS.

Romeo Doubs has been the talk of the off-season and logged 4 catches for 37 yds in his debut. He looks like a player.

Zach Tom has been putting up elite pass blocking grades in the PS but struggled coming in as the #6 OL filling in at LG week 1. He was outmatched but shows some potential.

Kingsley Enagbare appears to be OLB3 coming in behind Preston and Gary. He had a pretty consistent camp and came on strong toward the end. Logged 10 snaps in week 1 and got a couple tackles.

The rest of the draft picks are either on the roster or practice squad but didn't make game day active or take any snaps.

  • WR Jahan Dotson - Had like 4 catches for 40+ yards & 2 TD's
  •
  • DT Phidarian Mathis - got hurt week 1 & out for season
  •
  • RB Brian Robinson - got shot about a week ago in the thigh & butt. Currently on 4 game IR.
  •
  • S Percy Butler - Honestly not sure how much he played, or how he did.
  •
  • QB Sam Howell - He's our 3rd string QB
  •
  • TE Cole Turner - Was out week 1 from ankle injury. Might be full go vs Lions this week.
  •
  • OL Chris Paul - Don't know how much playing time he got if any.
  •
  • CB Christain Holmes - Played some, but little impact I'm guessing.

Chris Olave (CB, Round 1, pick 11) - looked good. Smooth route runner, just as advertised. Would love to see his speed utilized a bit more as the season goes on.

Trevor Penning (OT, Round 1, pick 19) - Injured. Struggled in pass protection in his first preseason game, but looked to be improving as he was getting more reps. Unfortunately he got injured in the final preseason game game will likely miss the season.

Alontae Taylor (CB, Round 2, pick 49) - he plays special teams and has made a few tackles there in W1. Was injured most of the preseason, so didn't see many snaps.

D'Marco Jackson (LB, Round 5, pick 161) - Injured Reserve.

Jordan Jackson (DT, Round 6, pick 191) - Practice Squad.

Outside of Olave, it looks like we will have to wait until next season to see how this class plays out.

Strange was alright. Got benched due to a mistake. Kinda harsh right? I mean it was his first day

The rookie CBs were fine. No one got beat, they allowed some stuff in front of them but it’s Tyreek Hill - I mean what are you going to do? Jones should have had a pick but Hill stole it

Dylan Parham - Rotated in at OG and held his own, had the 3rd highest PFF grade amongst OG's.

Zamir White - Played 0 offensive snaps.

Neil Farrell Jr - Healthy scratch

Matthew Butler - Healthy scratch

Thayer Munford - Rotated in at RT but didn't play very well

Brittain Brown - Healthy scratch

2.33 Logan Hall

Played 20 snaps and looked solid as a rotational piece. Had a TFL in the run game shedding off of Zack Martin. Shows a lot of potential as a disrupter.

2.57 Luke Goedeke

Thrown into a starting role sooner than we’d like next to another first time starter at C, but held his own and did really well in run blocking. Played like an average NFL player I’d say and it’ll only be up from here. Have total faith in our OL coaches after Marpet, Wirfs, Cappa.

3.91 Rachaad White

Played at the end of the game when we just were running out the clock and the D knew it. Has flashed and gotten a lot of praise in practice, earning the #2 spot over Vaughn very quickly.

4.106 Cade Otton

No targets, but played nearly half of snaps on O and looked very solid blocking. Looking forward to seeing him build some chemistry with Brady and seeing him get a few targets a game soon.

4.133 Jake Camarda

Looked like an above average punter. Two out of three punts inside the 20, and one punt sent to the end zone for a TB. Did his part in helping control the field position battle.

5.107 Zyon McCollum

A project for sure, but has been getting praise in camp and won the #4 CB spot. Out with a hamstring injury at the moment.

6.218 Ko Kieft

This man is going to be a fan favorite. Played 16 snaps on offense as TE and some FB. Looked good blocking and plays with intensity.

Our 7th rounder Andre Anthony had some sacks in PS but didn’t make the roster

Overall, looking solid. No stand outs yet but Logan definitely can be the star of the class in the future. If Goedeke can play at league average as a rookie that’s all we need this year.

BROWNS:

3rd-Martin Emerson CB Mississippi State
**hated the pick initially. Has been excellent. Physical in run support and at catch point. Looks like a future star.

3rd-Alex Wright DE UAB
**loved the pick on draft day. He’s been good in the preseason, but didn’t do anything week 1.

3rd-David Bell WR Purdue
**has been battling nagging injuries. Very high hopes for him. He got some reps in game 1, but didn’t do anything.

4th-Perrion Winfrey DT Oklahoma.
**also loved this pick. Didn’t really flash in the preseason or in game 1. High hopes though.

4th-Cade York K LSU
**simply awesome. Has been worth more than a 4th thus far, but it’s early. Kid is a stud.

5th-Jerome Ford RB Cincinnati
**stud in the preseason. Was ripping teams apart, but won’t see any time aside from special teams this year behind Chunt.

6th-Michael Woods WR Oklahoma
**has allegedly been awesome in camp. Haven’t noticed him in the preseason or game 1 do anything.

7th-Isaiah Thomas DE Oklahoma
**looks and acts the part of a rotational DE. Has tools and probably should’ve been drafted higher based on the small sample size.

7th-Dawson Deaton C Texas Tech.
**was injured pretty much immediately this year. Like the fit in our ZBScheme though. Could be good depth at T/G/C.

**Between Emerson and Hunt, this class is already pretty good given the absolute lack of high value picks**

Early grade: B.

Here’s something I found:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-rookie-power-rankings-entering-week-2-three-texans-on-tight-list-jahan-dotson-top-offensive-player/amp/

Based on this, Texans G Kenyon Green was the best rookie in the league, and Derek Stingley Jr wasn’t too far behind (Sauce Gardner was between these two). I don’t know if this passes the eye test for me, because in that specific game - Jalen Pitre was an incredibly impactful presence, perhaps the best player on the field not named Jonathan Taylor (Pitre came in at 11).

Dameon Pierce was perhaps the biggest disappointment of this Texans rookie class - after a flashy preseason which earned him RB1 status, he yielded a lot of time to washed up journeyman Rex Burkhead. This could be poor coaching decisions from the Texans decision makers, so not sure I can completely put this on Pierce?

Nonetheless, it’s a disappointing start following an encouraging preseason.
