Cancun

Offense:

Gotham has a strong pass rush on the defensive line, but their interior DL is shallow and not very effective against the run. With that in mind, we’ll be pounding the rock heavily today, keeping their offense off the field by sustaining long drives and wearing down the defensive front. The goal is a 65-35 run-pass ratio, with Mahomes running play action heavily especially in short yardage situations regardless of down. On 1st/2nd and short, we especially want to focus on taking shots deep to Elijah Moore and Courtland Sutton on the outside. Aaron Jones is our bellcow with Rhamondre Stevenson handling some short yardage and red zone work.

We will be running 21 personnel for about 25% of our formations, getting Kyle Juszczyk and Rhamondre Stevenson snaps in the backfield in pistol and I-formation sets and motioning Juszcyk into a 22 formation to get him and Schultz blocking up front on the same side of the line. We are especially confident relying on our stout right side of the line, where Zion Johnson only allowed two pressures going up against Chris Jones IRL this past week and has been a strong run blocker so far in his rookie season and Sam Cosmi has had a strong start to the season after finishing 2021 on a high note. We would love to run right at Shaq Barrett, who doesn’t really have the size to hold up in run defense all game. In addition, we have stud Wyatt Teller manning left guard, allowing us to get a lot of push up the middle.

In the passing game, we know Howard and Gardner are a tough corner duo, but we expect Gotham to have to bring a safety up into the box to handle our run scheme, allowing us to pick our shots on the outside. Mahomes will be looking Gardner’s way in particular, waiting to see if the rookie makes mistakes. To help our receivers get open, we’ll be utilizing some pre-snap motion to move Moore across the line and keep Gardner from pressing him at the line. Sutton will focus more on go routes, deep crossers, and hitch routes where he can use his size to box out Howard. Schultz will once again be a big part of our passing gameplan, as none of Gotham’s linebackers are especially adept in coverage. He will be our number one target in the passing game as we work the middle of the field on play action. Aaron Jones will be working a number of routes, with flares, slips, and angle routes to get him upfield against a backer. Any time we can get Jones in coverage against a linebacker, we’re going to try to get him the ball.

To protect our QB, we want to have our FB help out Nijman on the left side on pass plays, going with a 6-man protection up front. We’re confident in the rest of our line to hold up against the Gotham pass rush. We’ll also be utilizing a number of screen passes to the weakside with Aaron Jones and Stevenson, relying on our big bodies up front to clear a path for our backs and let them do their work in open space, especially Jones.

Defense:

This week we get Gotham, who provides a bit of a unique matchup for us. We anticipate that Gotham gives the nod to Trey Lance at QB, having given him their full endorsement and announcing that there is no quarterback controversy.

Gotham is down to one running back this week in CEH, and a couple of their players are banged up and either won't play or will be game time decisions in Higgins and Conklin. As a result, we like our depth advantage and our ability to match personnel with linebackers and safeties depending upon what personnel groups Gotham gives us.

We anticipate a lot of shotgun with some RPOs and heavy crossing routes and drag routes with Hill and Kirk. We love our matchups on our DL, LB, and S situations, and intend to dominate the middle of the field while conceding short throws outside the numbers, but making them attack us there on hitches, speed outs to the outside WR, and comeback routes. Linebackers will be providing drop support on slant routes and other in breaking short to intermediate routes, taking those away and forcing tight window throws. With Lance, we will be accounting for him as a runner with a LB or S depending upon Personnel groupings.

We will NOT be allowing Tyreek Hill to beat us deep, period. We will cap him with a S over top (Williams).

With the Kittle trade, we anticipate more 4 WR sets and will match personnel with Pitre and Thompson both playing in the slot, with Thompson as a bonus apex for middle route and Byard and Williams will be our true 2 high S over the top. We love Byard to show a high look and play a LOT of robber, confusing the young QB in Lance. It gives us the disguise of a 2 high shell while actively forcing tight window throws or turnover opportunities over the middle of the field, to go with the ability to tackle short of the sticks.

(Note: See the cushion on the outside with the advantage the D has to the middle of the field. We will run this look both in MATCH coverage, which is not shown, and off man, which is shown)

maxresdefault.jpg

(This should be an indicator of what we like vs. 4 wide showing man but running match/zone and capping the deep balls to Hill.)

We will also be mixing in a LOT of zone pressures, taking advantage of the inexperience at the QB position and disguising the defense pre-snap.

b683bf5783783c53c4899779f41211b5_crop_ex

We love this pressure as a run or pass rush look with a stunt up front and showing man while running zone.

Diagram-1-Traditional-Nickel-Blitz-Fire-

We also love these looks as a mixer off of the robber coverage, but the bottom CB will bail before the snap, showing press man but then backing off.

We believe that CEH will not be a threat running the football with consistency inside the tackles, so we will be "spilling" everything to our LB and S on the QB run, while pressing the opposite gap with the other inside linebacker (the linebacker opposite the RB in shotgun, an A gap player). We will be aligning the 1 Tech TO the RB side to eliminate the QB run threat in the A gap, while the DE will play a Jam/5 or 9 Technique (depending upon whether or not there's a TE), removing the outside run threat for Lance, and our playside LB will be scraping to the B gap.

Note: Some call a JAM technique a 7 to the TE:

Effectively, we maintain our sound GAP responsibilities in our front 7 and have effectively decided to make CEH beat us between the tackles, which we don't believe that he has the ability to do, and we don't believe that Gotham has the personnel or depth to run 12 personnel with any consistency. On the off chance they do run 12 personnel, we will be taking the apex player off of the field and adding our 3rd linebacker in either Long or Roberts or our 3rd Safety in Thompson.

Gotham

We took quite the beating week 1, but we still believe that we are going to be a tough opponent week in and week out. We will continue to give the Gotham fans a worthy effort as we find ourselves facing the new look of my old team: the Cancun Kaiju. The Kaiju are run by two very strong managers and have the best QB in the game, but we believe we can put together a gameplan that will minimize his impact.

Offense:

The Kaiju boast the best QB in the game, and we believe defeating him begins by keeping him off the field. This week on offense we are going to run a very slow paced, methodical offense that utilizes a lot of misdirection, audibles, but ultimately safe plays. We believe this will keep the Kaiju defensive coordinator off balance while simultaneously taking advantage of a thin CB group.

Trey Lance gets the benefit of the doubt after a rough week 1, and we remain committed to him as our starter. He will operate mainly out of the pistol in this game as we seek to maximize his ability to run as well as maintain our downhill running from our RBs.

In the first half of the game, we will have 3 play calls in neutral situations: a run play, a pass play out of spread formation, and a pass play out of bunch formation. We will drill how long it takes for us to set and reset out of our formations. This will allow us to move in and out of our spread and bunch using audibles with little time to spare on the play clock, hopefully generating maximum confusion and minimizing the disguising available to the defense. Out of the spread, we will focus on horizontal and quick passing concepts as well as some QB designed runs. Out of bunch, we will focus on flood and levels concepts. In the second half of the game, we will continue to utilize the play clock and our audible system, but we will also open the door for quicker snaps if Lance feels we've caught the defense napping.

With our offensive system, our WRs will constantly be in motion and moving around the lineup. We want to spread the ball around in this game and simply take any favorable 1v1 matchup we can get against the Kaiju corners. Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jeff Wilson will rotate evenly as the running back and both will be involved as receivers.

Defense:

We have a lot of faith in our defensive talent and believe we can be a challenge for any offense in this league with a simple but tried-and-true Cover-2 press man base defense.

We aren't looking to change our defensive strategy much from last week. We will rotate Chandler Jones, Shaq Barrett, and Demarcus Lawrence off the edge with Jones getting more use on passing downs and Lawrence on running downs. Chris Jones, Shelby Harris, and Fletcher Cox will rotate inside with Cox and Harris seeing more use on passing and running downs, respectively. Ideally, all of our guys will see about 2/3rds of the snaps. We will utilize all the standard tricks (stunts, twists, etc) to help our four man front generate pressure.

Xavien Howard and Ahmad Gardner will play sides and press at the line. Tyson Campbell will play the slot and Rock Ya-Sin will play as our dime corner for Jamin Davis when needed. Micah Hyde and Darnell Savage will play in a 2-deep shell with the occasional mix-up to a Robber. Zach Cunningham and Davis will cover the RB and TE based on alignment.

Yep. Lack of respect tbh

I had 3 people ask me for less graphics so that’s what I did. Now apparently people want more again. Lol no idea what to do.

Alright so normally I would wait until after all of the games have been played  Especially as someone who has criticized others for not doing so. However as of today one of these teams does not even have an owner anymore therefore I am going to make my decision now.

I think both of these rosters have a lot to offer and I think that if Gotham had ownership that had remained with the league this might be a harder decision except for Trey Lance simply not being the guy to this point the San Francisco 49ers had hoped he would be. I'm not even including the fact that he was injured because in this particular game that is not currently relevant. However this would have been a really good week to start Mac Jones.

Despite all of that for me it comes down to the fact one owner quit and therefore my decision is that Cancun would win this gsme.
