Week 3 GDT: San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos

I predict we will see the short passing game and running game on offense.  Wilson and the blocking looked better this week.

Burford should get a gold star.  He locks guys up when he gets his hands on them.  He held up to that big old dude on Seattle's interior quite well.  Brendal looks really ok at center, relentlessly meh, but it could be worse there.  Is Banks athletic enough to play LG in this scheme?  It's not the most agile guy in space, and I am not sure why we expect that from him.  I don't think i'll rewatch this one, so I hope my observations didn't suck ,lol.

This game will likely go down just like every Seahawks game used to go.

49ers will jump out hot and put up 2 score lead early...defense will dominate at first.

49ers offense will be driving deep into Denver territory for a 3rd score to blow the game wide open and then Jimmy will hit a wide open DB in the chest for a pick six... the denver crowd will go apesh*t and what should have been a blowout will become a hard fought dog fight

49ers will do nothing in the 3rd qtr as jimmy will get sacked a bunch and throw or nearly throw multiple ints

the 49ers defense will wear down and inevitably Russell Wilson will s**t rabbits out of his a** in the 4th quarter

ok probably not but i have no faith in jimmy winning against Russ on the road. none. ziltch. sorry

49ers DVOA rankings through two weeks:

Offense - 17

Defense - 4

STs - 16

Overall - 10

The defense should finish in the top 3 when it is all said and done and the offense should creep up in the top 10. If the STs can stay even average, then this is a better team than last season.

Looking through PFF's updated premium stats, here are some interesting takeaways through 2 games:

  • Spencer Burford has given up 0 pressures through 65 pass blocking snaps. For reference, there are only 16 guards through two games that have 0 pressures, only James Daniels has more snaps played with 0 pressures (85 snaps).

  • Aaron Banks has played the same amount of snaps as Burford and has 3 pressures to his name. I'm not one for their grades, but Banks has the 4th best true pass set blocking grade of all guards at 79.6.

  • Both Banks and Burford lead all guards with run blocking snaps. Banks has 5th best zone blocking grade at 82.1.

  • Hufanga has the 2nd best grade of all safeties at 90.7. Gibson is 4th with 82.1.

  • Hufanga has the 3rd most run defense stops in the NFL and 4th best run stop percentage in the NFL of all positions.

  • Womack is sitting just inside the top 10th in slot corner stats. Of the 33 qualified corners, he has the 7th fewest yards (23), 5th fewest catches (4), 6th fewest targets (6), 5th fewest snaps (30)

So this defense is allowing 210 YPG and 9.5 PPG (Not counting the STs TD last week vs SEA) and the Broncos are allowing 243 YPG and 13 PPG.

Sure both defenses have played average to below average offenses, but man this is going to be a nasty, low scoring defensive battle for much of the game lol. And that's exactly how Wilson likes it as he will wait until the 4th quarter to unleash on us and pull off the win SMH.

I had OL & S as weaknesses coming into the season. So far they've exceeded my expectations and I hope that continues. The question mark now is QB. Jimmy referenced 2017 in his postgame presser and i hope we can get 2017 Jimmy for the rest of the year. Even 2019 or 2021 will be good enough to at least make it as a WC team.

Broncos are a good team that's poorly coached. We SHOULD win, but I'm sure Wilson will somehow pull off 1 or 2 miraculous plays to win the game

Wilson will be the lead RB, Deebo probably behind. I wonder if Mack or Mason will get more carries?

Looking at the stats on PFF and Football Outsiders, both of these teams are nearly identical in several stats. To sum it up, we both play good defense lead by the coverage units, pass rushing is above average for both, but not great. The pass attacks are under performing right now, but both can run the ball. Both teams are well above average in pass blocking and generally pretty good at run blocking, too.

Denver is a little more explosive on offense, but not by much and our coverage unit has had a few more big plays but not by much.

We're essentially going to be playing ourselves this week.

Normally, advantage goes to the home team in these kinds of match ups, but there is also the Hackett effect to keep an eye on. One or two of his bone-headed decisions could turn the tide in our favor.

2017 Jimmy got rid of the ball in 1.8 seconds in that small stretch of games. It was phenomenal. He hasn't been that quick since then.

Jimmy threw the ball down the field four times by my count on 24 attempts (including penalties). I wonder if that will be something he does more of the rest of the way or if that was just a one off as it was probably part of the Lance game plan? Even though he was not accurate with his passes (was on the Aiyuk drop), it led to over 40 yards in penalties and resulted in three first downs. We have the personnel to take advantage of all areas of the field.

Let's see if Kittle will be a go tomorrow in practice, but I suspect he will be returning and that's going to give a boost to this offense.

Honestly, Jimmy will never be healthier than he will be for this game, so yeah, I'd say lets try and stretch the field while we can. It will surely throw the Broncos off a bit.

Jimmy did have some success with deep shots in 2019. We have a guy who can stretch the field like we've never had before, so hopefully they do take some shots to keep the defense honest.

This is why I can't stand this man lol.

The OL has played well for the most part in the first two games. But they played in a monsoon against the Bears and a talented-less Seahawks team. But the advance stats and PFF grades say one thing during week 2 and he's already making his snarky comments. Like how about you let it play out a few more weeks before making any conclusions?

I get it, but Banks and Burford have been stellar, albeit in a relatively small sample size. But still, it's impressive and reassuring that they're playing really well so far.

This week is a test for both of them, especially Banks with Dre'Mont Jones playing really well so far for the Broncos. He's primarily lined up on the right side of the line, so he'll be going against Banks and Trent quiet a bit.

DJ Jones will be primarily lined up against Brendel and Banks, so again, real good test for Banks this week.

Brought to you by the same people who said Tom Compton was the third best tackle  in the league last year.
