The memories of when we were meaningful team WFT

I been gone for a while just to think and I go nothing but memories growing up in the late 70's, 80's, and 90's when we knew we had a chance.  It almost makes me cry just typing this right now.  So if anyone wants to go back in the past just for a little bit I am sharing this video and I hope you will feel the nostalgia that I am feeling.

@butz65, I tend to let a lot of stuff slide, but can you refrain from profane language, please? Almost every one of your posts contains it. Webby has rules and even with those, @naptownskinsfanand I are pretty lenient because we are all adults. However, he does want to keep this board as family friendly as possible.

I love your takes on things. Just help me and naptown out and cut down on that stuff, please.

Let's face it, this team ceased to exist when we changed the name, you can all chose to ignore it, but it's the truth, we are well and truly FKD.

Agree in part, but as I’m probably a little older I think the beginning of the end was when the Squire ( as Tony Kornball used to refer to him) passed away and the end was when Snyder took the team. While you may not admire the many faults of JKC he had three things going for him- 1. He’s a winner, 2. He had style/flash, and 3. He was secure enough to hire and listen and support experts in the business. He’s a legend

The Redskins were a fun team to support in the 60’s and while they didn’t win much- they and the fans all had a good time. When we hired Vince I thought it was a dream come true. Then tragedy. George and the over the hill gang and 3 yards and a cloud of dust was so different than the 60’s but we were finally winning. Nobody cared about the draft picks he’d trade anyway as Mel kiper was a teenager dreaming of the block not first round mock drafts.
Then heaven sent us Joe Gibbs paired with the magic man Bobby Bethard.  I was mad at first that we hired a WR coach and  thought for sure he’d get fired during the first half of the season. So glad I was wrong!! I attended almost 100 games at RFK over the years and that will always be the Redskins stadium in my mind. Back in the day you had to have a “hook up” to get season tickets as the wait list was two generations long.

Really when JKC passed and eventually when Snyder took it over, I knew we were done. I’ve known guys like him for years- money but no style, soul or class. That’s the type of team we’ve had ever since.

but I’m an optimist- it can turn around fast, but needs to start at the top with Snyder gone first or any positive it’s just a mirage or as the saying goes “just perfume on a horseturd”

Doc out

starting rooted for them in 04, im 32 now. I dont know what its like to have a winning team. We have been a punching bag for 18 years of my fandom. Tired of them being a joke and laughing stock. I just dont understand how snyder can be so bad at his job.

Like... why still venture in here? I grew up a Washington fan. Wasn't upset when they weren't the Washington Bullets anymore either. Heck you can change the name of any team ever and I still won't care. It's just a name.

@Doc Draper I disagree with your assessment of when the beginning of the end was. Everyone forgets how mostly awful, at best average the team was when Gibbs retired the first time in 1993. The beginning of the end of this franchise being great was when Gibbs retired after the 1992 season. Casserly had some awful draft picks, trades & FA signings for most of the 90s until finally hitting on things in 98 & 99 but that took 5-6 years to get to.

Small quibble. Casserly put together a bulk of the team that won the Super Bowl in 1991. IIRC the defense specifically was his handiwork and some of the offense too. He did have some bad years for about 4 years, but he was pretty masterful turning the Sean Gilbert problem into 2 first rounders and getting Lavar and Samuels and the setting us up with Champ (who we squandered away after he left). I don't think he was a bad GM at all. He was competent and on the better than average side with a slice of great (see: 1991 Redskins Super Bowl Champions)

I have to say, I feel more disconnected from the team this year than I ever have. The name change itself is a big part of it — but I think it’s also just the way they went about the process, it just makes clear that they can have a new name, but nothing meaningful has changed or will change.

The new name sucks, and that’s the first problem. It’s generic, it’s military (the one thing I didn’t want), and basically all the branding (uniforms, logo, etc) they came up with is awful.

But beyond that, the whole thing is just classic SnyderSkins. Ignore what the fans want, but somehow even worse — reach a decision early on, pretend like you want to know what the fans think, go through whole fake surveys and polls, blatantly lie about why the widely preferred name was not chosen, then totally botch the rollout of the stupid name no one wanted.

I hate saying the new name, I hate looking at the corny new uniforms, I hate that our once majestic logo is a freaking stencil of a letter. I hate that all the stuff I owned is obsolete — my jerseys, Art Monk and Darrell Green and Terry Allen and Clinton Portis and all my Sean Taylors. Not to mention all the other stuff I accumulated over the years. Not to mention all the stuff my dad accumulated as a fan since 1956. Not to mention all the stuff my grandparents accumulated as fans from the very beginning until the day they died.

And I hate that even after Ron Rivera is gone, and Jason Wright is gone, and after even Dan and Tanya Snyder are gone, this stupid name will be defining this franchise. And I hate that on some level, I’m always going to associate it with this debacle, no matter what other positive associations they manage to build over the next few decades.

The sad truth is, I think the moment they took the field as “the Commanders,” in those ridiculous white and black jerseys, that was when Snyder’s destruction of this franchise was fully complete. In a fitting twist, the dumb Commanders marching band even butchered the Star Spangled Banner to commemorate the occasion. Whether he (or, more likely, someone else) can rebuild it remains to be seen.

I profoundly apologize, I watched the game having a few brews and I am sick of seeing the same thing week in week out, so I came on here to blow off steam with fellow Skins fans that have been let down year after year, my friends do actually call me potty mouth after I have had a few. 🤐

Because I want to, and that is just your opinion because you are probably only 10 and don't remember them anyway.

I’m in my 30s. When I was born, my dad put a hand knit burgundy and gold blanket on me in the maternity ward so he could easily point me out to my diehard fan grandma when she drove from Maryland to see me for the first time. When I was 2, the Redskins won their last Super Bowl. My dad actually thought he hurt me when he was celebrating when tossed me up and my head barely hit the ceiling. When I was in my teens, my brother was in the Air Force and I called him after Clinton Portis’ first handoff against the Buccaneers. In my 20s, I went to 2 games, both prime time divisional games in RGIIIs rookie year. Now in my 30s, I’m taking my dad to his first game ever when they play the Cowboys because despite the name change, my dad loves fewer things than this team, and he’s for the most part paralyzed now.

They could have named themselves anything, the Washington Daisies, Proctologists, Two Shoes, Hillbillies, Dollar Store Fishing Lures, I don’t care. I’m in it with this team because it reminds me of all of my great family moments, and the name is the last part I think about.
