It's a cost/benefits analysis. Right now the vultures are circling overhead and the owners are starting to grumble about him. Firing Rivera after a 5 or 6 win season, even if it is after Season 3, is going to cause a lot more heat as it exposes more instability questions. But if Rivera goes 1-16 this year and starts off poorly next year? He's got enough reason to weather any negative affects of firing his coach then as anyone would expect an owner to do so. Again, think about what situation Snyder is in right now. He doesn't want to change anything (coaches, front office, etc...) at the moment because it makes his organization look stable and on the right track (no longer a frat house, etc...). Rivera being out in front of that is that shield I was talking about.
