Lancaster Offensive Strategy:

We’ve been leaning on our running game a lot this year so far, but with our receiving corps looking like it might finally be at full strength again, along with Jalen Hurts playing so well to start the year, we want to open up the passing game a bit more this game. This should also help us catch Seoul unawares with the change in strategy as well as help us exploit their biggest weakness on defense, their cornerbacks.

We want to open up the game testing their corners right away running a variety of route concepts out of our base package. We’ll test them deep (especially with Quez Watkins) but mainly target the short and sometimes intermediate parts of the field to get the ball out of Hurts’ hands quickly. We want to hit Diontae Johnson especially early on with slants and screens and curls. Routes that will get him in space against defenders. We’ll sprinkle in some 4 WR looks either by bringing in Philips/Moore or by flexing Gesicki or a running back out wide. Point is we want to open up the passing game early to get our quarterback and wide receivers in rhythm.

After a couple of drives of passing hot, we want to slow things down and again and become more balanced on offense. While the focus is still going to be on the passing game, we want to work in our running backs more because it’ll stop the defense from pinning their ears back and also we have a talented and deep triple threat at running back that we want to utilize. This will of course also help open up the play action game that we like using so much. We will hit them early with some draws since the defense will be expecting more pass but as the game goes on we want to focus on more outside runs to avoid the beefy interior defensive line that Seoul has. As usual, we want our linemen pulling as that’s a strength of theirs. We will be rotating our running backs in fairly evenly, using Fournette and Sanders more on passing downs.

Our goal on offense this week is to take advantage of Jalen Hurts good play at quarterback and attack what we think is Seoul’s biggest defensive weakness. We want to test their corners often but mainly work in the short game to get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands quickly and to take advantage of our receivers YAC ability. We want to use the run game to slow down the pass rush and set up play action. We want to mainly attack the edge with our running backs.

Lancaster Defensive Strategy:

Our gameplan on defense this week is going to be about playing balanced defense. We’re going to play out of a base 4-3 this week in anticipation of Seoul’s 12 personnel base. We want to shut down their tight ends as much as possible, they are our focus in the passing game.

As usual, we’ll be using mainly man coverage this week. Against Seoul’s 12 personnel looks, Jalen Ramsey will cover MVS and Jaire Alexander will cover Rashod Bateman. Fred Warner will cover Travis Kelce with Vonn Bell providing help over the top. Bobby Wagner will cover Pat Freiermuth. Malcolm Rodriguez will be keying on the running back, covering him if he comes out of the backfield, chasing him down if he runs, blitzing if he stays in to protect. Minkah Fitzpatrick will be in a jack-of-all-trades role where we’ll use him in single high, intermediate middle of the field zones, blitzing occasionally. He’ll wear many hats. When Seoul goes to 11 personnel, Rodriguez will come off the field to be replaced by K’Waun Williams who will cover the 3rd receiver and Wagner will key on the running back.

For our defensive line this week, our plan is all about rotation, rotation, rotation. We’re down our top two pass rushers but we feel that we can still keep this unit effective. We especially want to work on getting our pass rush pressure from the inside, with both Kenny Clark and Justin Madubuike having good years in this regard. On the outside, we’ll be heavily rotating our four EDGE players, with JFM and Arden Key getting rotated on the interior defensive line a fair bit as well as they both often do in real life. The primary role of our EDGE players this game will be gap integrity, stopping the run. In our obvious passing downs we’ll let them pin their ears back but as previously stated, we want to get our pressure from the interior. None of our EDGE players are going to single handedly change the game like Watt or Bosa can, but they can be an effective unit when kept fresh

Seoul

Motivation:

Offensive Strategy:
Formations: 12 Man Personnel(60%), 11 Man Personnel (40%)
Scheme:  Pass(60%), Run(40%)
Tempo:  Quick

Passing:   We will look to bring a more pass heavy attack this week against a talented Lancaster squad.    We look to feature a ton of trips formations out of both groups, we will motion our slot WR/TE into a trip formation to help determine coverages.   Our WR and TE’s will have full route tree, hoping to bunch Lancaster’s talented CB’s in man coverage.   We believe we can utilize Bateman and Parker’s YAC skills by bunching them up in these trip formations.

Running:    We will work with a Power running game this week and keep Lancaster’s LB core focused on playing forward.   Javonte and Dameon will split the work this week, we like both RB’s abilities to run between the tackles and create extra yards.   We want to focus on getting them to the 2nd level through the B and C gaps.

Defensive Strategy:

Formations:  5-1 Bear Nickel ,   4-1 Dime

Passing:  We will mainly be featuring a Cover 2 and Cover 3 this week in our base formations.   Nate Hobbs and Adebo will handle the outside, with Taron Johnson and Nick Cross handling the slot/TE.    Joe Tryon and Frank Clark will have some short coverage drops this week to account for the 5 man front.    In our subpackage we will move to a more aggressive Cover 1 and Cover 2 man mixture.      In Cover 1, Nick Cross will have some freedom..  in 3rd and long situations we will have him bracketing Diontae Johnson and 3rd <5   he will be spying Lancaster’s QB’s.    Demario Davis has RB responsibilities.   Richie Grant will focus on Michael Pittman while playing deep in our cover 1 sets.

Matchups for man coverage.

Paulson Adebo -  Michael Pittman
Nate Hobbs – Diontae Johnson
Taron Johnson – Mike Gesicki
Kyler Gordon -  3rd WR
Demario Davis -  RB

Rushing:    Lancaster features a strong power running game this week, along with a couple QB’s that can also add to the running game.   We are coming out with a 5-1 front, and want our DL focused on attacking a single gap.   We hope to get into the backfield early to disrupt their RB’s and RPO’s before they develop.

Give me Lancaster. I think that they just have too much defensive talent, and right now, we have a darkhorse BDL Title contender with Hurts at the helm, albeit I'm going to need to see more consistency and production on the outside and in the running game from the RB spot down the stretch. I think @RedGold has some talent on his roster and some productive weapons like Kelce, but right now Russell Wilson is a net negative. Perhaps that changes as the season goes.

Boogie Basham is gonna have himself a day against these OT but in the end I think Lancaster does just enough to win another defensive struggle this week.  I don't know how Quez Watkins and his 2 catches this entire year is a BDL starter, but that's where we are

Lancaster 14-10

Can I just say that Braxton Jones has actually been decent this season. I'm not going to hype him and say he's an all-pro or anything but he's been a solid player. Evan Neal I got no excuses for but Braxton Jones has actually been solid for the Bears.

These are just some really bad offensive lines outside of the left guard spot.

I just don't see Lancaster moving the ball here. Hurts doesn't have an AJ Brown to bail him out, and while Miles Sanders had a big week, he's not getting the ball much in this game according to the gameplan. Lancaster being down Alexander, pushing Kindle Vildor into the starting lineup (I guess) doesn't help.

Spencer Brown is still pretty up and down.

But AVT has been spectacular 4 out of 5 games this year.     Even looked great despite flipping from RG to LT last week.   That might be one of the toughest OL transitions to make.
