There isn’t another explanation. Either Gute has to sit down and say I ducked up, or he had to say Barry ****ed up.

The real answer is they both ****ed up.

We arent getting better until Gute + MLF are gone.  If they are gone then Barry is gone.

I started this thread and believe he should have been fired today. I'm going to play devil's advocate here. Moreso because I can't believe he's still here but here goes. 

The defense was lights out against San Fran in the playoffs last year. The offense and special teams lost that game. The last five games we've looked competent to good on defense. 

I'm going to say MFL and Barry had a meeting of the minds and we are going to play more aggressive and not allow teams to run it down our throats. 

This defense should have the talent to be elite. Even if we don't bring back Amos or Lowry, we still have a lot of talent all across the field. You could actually move on from Preston Smith too. 

If Barry plays downhill this is a top 10 defense. IF not, well MFL and Gute ****ed up again.

MLF reports to Murphy, not Gute.

As I said earlier, I'm not sure MLF is a great head coach, maybe an offensive coordinator. But his decisions now and in the past on the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator make me wonder. 

Yes, the defense improved in the final five games.  But for the second year in a row (last night and last year against San Fran), when the defense was called upon late in the 4th quarter to stop someone and get the ball back for the offense, they had the ball run down their throat with no answer. You get the sense that the players are not all that enamored with the system either. Plus zone defense is not playing to Alexander's strength.

This is kind of the same thing that happened with special teams where it took MLF two years to really address the underperforming special teams.

MLF is focused on the offense, but largely ignores the performance of the other two.

And he has been begging for Rodgers to come back.

It will eventually cost him his job.

I would have agreed with this all right after the Viking game, as a devil's advocate. But the Detroit game, particularly the second half, didn't feel remotely aggressive.

The Lions have one of the best, if not the best offensive line in football. Also, we really had no outside pass rushers after Gary went down. Preston Smith is not it anymore. 55 is a 3rd EDGE at best. 

WE need to address EDGE rusher next year in a big way. Gary likely starts on PUP and I'd move on from P. Smith. 

I think next year is a 'get the cap right' year where we go young.

Listening to that presser with MLF, he preached continuity and its importance as a reason why he kept Barry. Next he goes on to praise how much Rich improved the special teams… ok that makes sense

I don't think playing aggressive downhill in Barry's default style.  Unfortunately,  going out of character can be done in short spurts, but will likely revert back to the default under tense/ pressure situations.

I tend to agree with this but trying to find a light at the end of the tunnel that isn't a freight train. 

He's got to be smart enough to figure out that is how you have to play in today's NFL.
