Does this season feel weird to you?

like, weirder than other seasons feel...

I was having a discussion with my football buddies, they were all saying how much this season doesn't make any sense at all. I was reminded that this has been said before, probably many times. But, wondering if you think this season is in particular a bit strange so far?

(for specifics, i'd probably suggest things like the number of teams expected to be good that are not, and vice-versa, stars not performing, strange outcomes to games, low scores etc)

It seems like (outside of the Bills and Chiefs) somewhat of a changing of the guard in terms of the teams that are becoming good, many of them against expectations. The NFC in particular is really weird. There's the Eagles and then a bunch of teams that are, well, just teams.

The AFC West was supposed to be a bloodbath; instead it's a laugher.

With Brady probably ending his career this year, BRees retired two years ago, No more mannings or Rivers or Roethlisberger in the league. It is just a changing of the guard to the next generation. It happens like this every 15 or so years. The entire league is going through a flux where schemes are shifting because of the caliber at certain positions are down while the caliber at others are higher. Pass rushers are better, but OLs are worse. QBs are in that not-prime-yet or over-the-hill area where they don't truly have a long-time vet who's hitting his prime. It's a weird season, but it's just a changing of the guard. Those happen.

That being said, I think people looked too much at collections of talent around the league and thought those teams would be great and not factoring in that it's not the collection of talent that creates winners. It's how the talent plays together.

Yes, my take on this is that more teams are comfortable blending rebuild periods over multiple years, whereas back in the day each team would want their starting QB for the next season locked in.

Marcus Mariota, Andy Dalton/Jameis Winston, Baker Mayfield, Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz, and to some degree Daniel Jones all would have very different careers in the 2000's NFL.

It seems, Bills and Eagles aside, Chiefs somewhat also, every team seems to have a massive weakness/injured unit/or a underperforming unit that can be exploited or will not show up for half a game that will cost you.

  • Browns Defence
  • Rams O-Line
  • 49ers D-Line (yday)
  • Saints WR's
  • Packer's WR's
  • Bucaneers Offense

I'm sure there is more you could list for lots of other teams but most teams have a glaring hole or problem that wasn't seen as a weakness entering the season or typically injuries for the ChargIR's and 49IR's.

Some lots of average football and .500 teams.
