Greenland Polar Bears

Motivation:

family-guy-peter-griffin.gif

Offensive Formations: 3WR/1TE/1RB (60%), 2WR/2TE/1RB (35%), 1WR/2TE/2RB (5%)

Offensive Tempo: very slow and methodical offense.  We want to snap the ball late in the clock and control the time of possession through our offense.

Designed Playcall Distribution: 50% slow mesh rpo, 30% pass, 20% playaction

Slow Mesh RPO: we want to use Pickett and his superior arm talent this game to play off of our great run game and gell them together with a heavy amount of slow mesh rpo.  What this will do is slow up the pass rushing from Cancun and force their edge guys and LB's to make a decision and commit to either the run, the pass or qb keep.  We are not looking for Pickett to keep a lot but just enough to keep the D honest and break a couple chunk plays.

Passing game:  We will spread out Cancun a lot using a heavy amount of 3WR sets with the WR's lined up outside the numbers.  We will be using trips and bunches a lot to help throw off the defensive coverage and give Pickett one or two routes per play that are more open due to the delayed reaction from the Cancun CB's in deciphering the routes at the line of scrimmage.

We want Godwin to build an early report with Pickett using slants and other routes across the middle, something Godwin shines at doing.

Diggs and Lamb will be the big targets down the field with a good dose of back shoulder throws, post, and dig routes.  Pickett has a beautiful touch so when we have the chances (especially against man) we want the hot route to be the back shoulder throw.

We will be using our RB's as the check down option and on swing passes this will help to get Pickett comfortable early as well and then we can fake those throws and take shots deep later in the game.

First series of the game: we want to establish the slow mesh rpo

Defense Base Formation: 4-4 In running situations and 3-3-5 in passing

Pass Defense: On passing downs we want to clog the passing lanes and give blanket coverage against what we view as a sub par wr group.  If they can't get open, Mahomes has no one to throw to.  To do this we will be playing a 3-3-5 with Miller and Quinn on the edges and Tariq Woolen as an extra CB with Adderley back in at SS.  We will constantly be mixing up coverages and who the 4th and sometimes 5th man blitzing will be.

Run Defense:  we want to stuff Jones and their run game early and often.  We feel their passing game is too weak bc of their receiving core to make up for having no run game.  We plan to go big with an 8 man box (4-4) in running situations and come with plenty of exotic run blitzes.

Blitzing: we want both of our run and pressure blitzes to come at the tackles, which is what we view as their weakest point with Cosmi out.  Throwing extra guys at backups will get either one of our elite pass rushers home to the qb or the blitzer.

Defensive rotation and formations notes:  we have DT, edge, LB, and DB depth to rotate in and keep everyone well rested.  As for formations, even though our base and dominant formation will be 4-4 in running situations and 3-3-5 in passing situations, we do want to sprinkle in some 3-4, 4-3, and nickel when warranted.

Cancun Kaiju

Offense:

This is a really good defense, but the biggest weakness is the secondary where Nasir Adderley is just an okay starter and Jordan Poyer has been in and out of the lineup. We’ll be using motion heavily in our passing game this week to identify the coverage scheme, with all four receivers playing every receiver position to make it difficult for the defense to match up. The tight ends will be used sparingly on about 40% of the snaps with the tight end playing the same role in the passing game as the slot receiver.

On passing plays, Mahomes will go in with an audible based on the coverage he sees from the motion. If we get Cover-1 or Cover-0, at least two receivers will be running deep routes. It won’t just be the outside receivers doing this; sometimes it’ll be the slot receiver running a post or corner route with an outside receiver running a go, other times we’ll get Aaron Jones running a wheel route out of the backfield. The key is to get two players going downfield on opposite sides of the field to force the safety to pick one and leave the other in single coverage. All it takes is for our receiver to get one step on the DB and it’s a touchdown. Sutton and Reynolds are both top-21 in receiving yardage and YPR this season; if y’all are going to keep doing this dumb ******* Cover-1 ****, they WILL get a step on the defender and Mahomes is going to make them pay.

If Greenland opts for Cover-2 or zone, we can rely on curls, slants, and dig routes to work the middle of the field and pick up easy yardage underneath. We’ll also utilize screens to the backs and tunnel screens to the receivers to pick up yardage underneath against a light box. If Greenland wants us to play ball control, we’re happy to play ball control to keep our defense fresh against their rushing game. In this case, we’ll pull Juszczyk for Stevenson to give us an additional receiving and rushing option.

In the run game, we don’t particularly want to run at Buckner and Watt, but wearing out the edge rushers and forcing rotations to less talented players than the starters is ideal. Jones will draw mostly runs outside the tackle while Stevenson handles inside runs, although neither will be limited to those types of rushes. Buckner will always draw a double team on running plays, as we don’t feel the rest of the front six is playing at a high level in the run game. We are aiming for a 60-40 pass-run ratio, but obviously if we’re moving the ball well one way or another, we’ll stick with the hot hand.

Defense:

Defensively this week, we will keep it simple.

If our opponent goes 3 or 4 wide, we will match personnel with Nickel/Big Nickel.

If our opponent goes 2 wide or 2 back/TE (whether that's a RB, FB, H Back, or 12/22 personnel), we will bring on a 3rd LB.

We will be using heavy rotation on the DL with our solid depth. If our opponent decides to go no huddle and/or hurry up, we will have one of our DT or DE fake leg cramps every 3rd play to get an injury timeout and free substitution.\

From a coverage standpoint, we will be playing a mixture of Cover 2, Cover 4, and rotational Cover 3. With Williams out, Pitre will slide into the traditional FS role, with Byard as the roamer/apex/box safety who also has the capability of sliding back out of the box in 4 wide.

We will blitz 20% of the time this week.

We will use stunts from our DL 20% of the time this week, with and without a MLB blitz thrown in the middle to confuse the interior OL (show but back off, show and go).

Aside from that, we plan on letting our Front 7 talent dominate the LOS and box while limiting big plays and playing a "bend but don't break" style of defense if we aren't able to generate a pass rush, which we will confident we'll be able to do in order to force turnovers and get key sacks that will get us off the field.

Looks like the DROY would move outside as he is listed as his number 3 corner.

I figured, but I thought I'd let Pickle speak for himself on that as I don't believe any of his corners have really played the slot.

So I'm not going to lie, I approached this thinking  Patrick mahomes did not have his best week, And the offense that Cancun has have did not necessarily prosper this week. I think both teams wrote a mostly good game plan.

There is one thing that puzzles me,  Kenny Pickett's arm talent is superior to who exactly?

I mean I watched the game he played really well up until his injury and there is reason to believe had he not been injured he still would have played very well. But who are you comparing his arm talent to?

I mean I have a hard time believing you'd be saying these things if he was playing for another team which is fine you should want to hype up your own players but can we bring it back down-to-earth a little bit, lol

So coming into this while I was reading the game plans I genuinely thought to myself man this was not a great week for Patrick mahomes. I also thought about how Most of the offense for Cancun really didn't perform.I mentioned a bit of this above in my comment, Here's the problem,  Cancun talkec about the things that they would do if Greenland runs certain coverages.  They talk situational football, Which is what I think a good game plan does. I don't know if if the make up of Cancun's roster truly helps them or hurt them in this game, I think it's fair to say that I have been openly critical of Cancun's roster.

But when I read Greenland's game plan, I have no idea what they're actually doing on defense. I mean I've seen the base formations there, I see a mention about nickel, But I don't get a feel for what coverages they are running.

So what I have to think to myself is, How do I know who is doing what in this game for either team.  I can't fault Cancun for what Greenland's defense doesn't say. I gotta go Cancun here.  And I'll be honest with a better explanation of defense I think Greenland has a trance to win this game, Because they caught Cancun on a not spectacular week, But that defense of game plan is just too vague. I cannot blame Cancun for not being able to tell what Cancun is doing as a result of a vague defense against them.
