Offense:

The thing that stands out about Flint’s defense is their awesome defensive line, arguably the best in the league. On the other hand, apart from James Bradberry, their back seven is pretty poor in our minds, and we think we can have a lot of success moving the ball here. This is a game we NEED to win to take control of the division, and we’re going to come out playing like it.

The best way to deal with a great defensive line is to force them to react rather than push upfield. To do that, we’re going to run a massive amount of play-action rollouts and RPO. We don’t expect Mahomes to turn into Lamar Jackson today, but we are giving him the green light to run with the ball here. The hope is that he will have 7-8 rushes; not quite a staple of the offense, but enough to force Flint to respect him as a ball carrier and commit a defender to playing up in the box to clear passing lanes.

We don’t have a particular number of passes to runs we want to have in this game, but we are hoping for a 2-1 ratio of passes to designed runs to take advantage of a very weak secondary. We expect our No. 2 and 3 receivers to have some great matchups where the DBs give up a ton of size against them, we feel either of them can beat their DBs one on one, and it’s just not feasible for Flint to put a safety over the top of both of them. A straight Cover-1 look would be a dream come true for getting the ball out quickly underneath for chain-moving gains. There will also be multiple 4 WR sets to spread the defense out and get Zaccheus/Moore in the slot to stretch the seam against a very weak CB group. The tight ends and backs won’t be major components of the passing game, instead being used to help slow down the pass rush and provide a checkdown option for Mahomes if the play is covered downfield.

We won’t be pigeonholing anyone into the slot specifically, but we will try Sutton and Olave in the slot early to see who Flint will shadow with Bradberry, if anyone; if they do, we’re going to target whoever gets Hilton outside, as he isn’t a good fit there. Otherwise, we won’t actively test Bradberry but look for opportunities to catch him out of position outside on comebacks and double moves.

The purpose of the rollouts, typically getting Mahomes moving to his left, is to move the pocket and create more time for receivers to get open. Atlanta has done this IRL with Marcus Mariota with significant success early on this season, and Mahomes is a massively superior player throwing the ball on the move. The offensive line will block down the line towards the rollout, leaving the end on the opposite side chipped by a tight end or running back just to slow him down. This eliminates Flint’s advantage up front by allowing us to double multiple linemen and force them to pursue Mahomes instead of boxing him into the pocket. We’ll be providing Mahomes with a hot read to check into a screen if he sees Flint lining up for a blitz or if they start assigning a linebacker/safety as a QB spy, so we can take advantage if the defense tries to get aggressive.

In the run game, we want to focus on attacking the edges of the defense with toss and stretch plays. We will heavily utilize two tight end sets or a tight end/fullback combo when running the ball, lining both players up on the side we’re running to. These formations will always be RPO plays with a QB keeper option, so that Mahomes can read the end and decide whether to keep or hand the ball off. By keeping the runs to the outside, we’ll be forcing the DL to pursue, wearing them down, and taking advantage of our size advantage against a very, very small second level of the defense; Flint effectively has two safeties playing linebacker in the base 4-3 we expect to see.

Jeffery Simmons is questionable this week, and if he doesn’t end up playing, we do want to have more inside runs when we see Jarrett or Wilkins come off the field to take advantage of poor depth and a lack of size in the middle of the defense.

Defense:

This week we get the red hot Flint Tropics.

Rimshot GIF

Our base personnel will be a 4-3 with Long on and Pitre off. Long has good size (rim shot) against some of the bigger skill players. Jack Jones will shadow Moore and we will bring in a third corner in 3+ wide sets.

Ultimately, we are going to try to make them run the ball against our Front 7, who is also red hot themselves, with a quality duo linebacker tandem and a DL with a combined 18 sacks between them headed into our matchup. If they want to feed Kamara, Deebo, and Singletary 30+ carries, then we are going to let them do so, as we don't believe that they'll be patient enough to do it, or that they'll have any relative success in an even numbers box game. If they decide the go bigger with Hurst on the field, we will be matching with an extra DE to play a 5 man BEAR front to occupy the front gaps (traditional 50 front 7 defensive look with 4 DB vs. the 2 wide/2 TE). The defensive line will rotate Austin Johnson in for Jordan Philips regularly to keep the middle of our defense fresh against the run.

(Note: Byard or Thompson will rotate down in the box depending upon personnel, as Byard will generally be locked on Kittle. If they have early success running the ball, Thompson will rotate down in the box and Byard will be the cap over top as more of a true FS)

34_vs_Bear_front.png

Werner excels in coverage and with his sideline to sideline ability. We will play Byard and Long over the TE to their respective side, and if they decide to overload with a 2 TE side, we will rotate the safeties and play an 8 man box cover 3 with the cap over top of Kittle and Werner covering him underneath/carrying him deep on the underneath.

04-Bear-Str-Roll.png?resize=840,630&ssl=

We anticipate that they'll be trying to attack the outside, as likely they will not love the Werner/Byard tandem cover and cap. We believe that Flint will try to get Deebo and Kamara a variety of touches, including usage out of the backfield in the passing game.

As we've done in the past, we will be utilizing a UFO defense if they decide to give us more of a spread look:

23blog2.jpg

Josh Allen is very dangerous when he knows the coverage pre-snap, so being able to mix in varying personnel/fronts and coverage looks presnap (Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 4, and off man/press man) will be our biggest ally.

We will focus on CONTAINING Allen within the pocket, aligning our TE in a 7/JAM to the TE and a wide 9 away from the TE. If it's double TE, then it's a Bear Front Double 7/JAM and the S will swap with the JAM/7 technique from the DE.

Ultimately, we hope to force some bad decisions and turnovers, while playing overall a relatively "conservative" coverage scheme that will limit big plays and make Flint have sustained, longer drives as opposed to giving up big play scores.

If they can do that, then hat's off, good for you. But the Front 7 will make you earn it, as will our safeties. The corners' only real job is to not get beat deep or give up big plays over the top.

OFFENSE

No lies, we are hurting this week at WR but all it does is even the playing field. We still have our full stable of RBs, our TEs and DJ Moore. Our "X-Factor" for lack of a better term this week is newly acquired Antonio Gibson. We don't have Deebo but we now have Deebo-lite an he should be able to keep our style going, although that's not to say he's ahead of Kamara, Kittle and Moore. We will start the game with 12 personnel. We want to get our tight ends involved in this game early and often. We expect them to use their linebackers and the odd safety to help plug up the holes and use athleticism outside to try and stop our run game. The extra tight end will back this much tougher. That should soften up the secondary and we can easily turn into 11 personnel with our tight ends, especially Kittle able to line up at wide receiver. We will definitely go into no huddle to make it difficult for the defense to matchup. Kittle can go to the X,Y, or Z to keep the defense off balance and it will be a bonus in giving DJ Moore more looks from different parts of the field to further keep the defense on edge. Kittle will be a WR in many 3 and 4 WR sets and either a WR or TE in 2 or 3 WR sets. All our RBs with the exception of Conner could line up at WR and we expect Kamara and to do it often, at least out of motion. We will also see plenty of 21 and 22 personnel. We want to give D'Onta Foreman the rock a lot this week along with Kamara while the TEs can help block or get involved in the pass via a standard play or an RPO. Josh Allen will be able to get quick throws off and find the opportunity to pick at the coverage, especially when it's single man coverage. We don't have as many deep threats but we want to hit the seams when they may be focusing on zone play. He also has free reign to keep the ball and run when we will motion the RB's, or more frequently, Gibson at WR and DJ, to decide whether they are playing man or zone, to check on matchups, but also to keep the front seven on edge. Kamara will at first be used to pound the inside or just off tackle with help from the tight ends. We want to take advantage of our line and TEs to execute some screens but we want our RBs to also run some short-medium routes, with Kamara moving out and running some deeper, more advanced routes. Singletary will also see some use in the pass game to get the linebackers busy. We will try to have Conner(or Foreman if he's out) out on 3rd downs with Kamara. We still want to establish the RBs as a run threat though so expect as 40% run share and a heavy use of RPOs. On RPOs we will be having our RBs(including Gibson) and Moore being the main run options. Kittle, Hurst, and Moore when he's in the slot will be our main RPO pass targets in medium yardage or down the seam, especially if the defense bite on the play-action. Josh Allen will have designed runs but the offense designed for him this week should give him plenty of opportunities to create his own plays on the fly, especially with the RPOs and 12 personnel. We will also run some 3 TE and 6 OL sets with Moore closer to the goal-line and on some short yardage situations. Decker has been fine and but we are starting newly acquired Tytus Howard at RT who has only allowed one sack on the year.

DEFENSE

4-3 defense. Pressure from the middle. Contain with our DEs before attacking with them so Mahomes can't easily escape. We have great coverage ability in our linebackers so we won't have them blitz more than one at a time. We want them to play in coverage and to stop the run. The linebackers are mainly going to be focused on stopping the run, watching Jones and Stevenson, watching for the TEs and routes running through the middle of the field. They can and will blitz but that is not their primary role. Jewell and Edwards will always be playing as true linebackers but Nick Scott on the strong side will play LB, safety and the Nickel/Dime. On any given play in the 4-3 he may be disguised and play the nickel instead. Julian Love is also capable of playing the same role and taking some snaps. We have confidence we can handle their receivers outside and deep with our DBs while our LBs should do well in the interior. Courtland Sutton should not be an issue at all but we want to make sure Olave doesn'texploit any holes in coverage wo if anyone will be double teamed at times, it will be him. We aren't going to just sit on that though. Tyrann Mathieu will often be coming up as the SS to join as an 8th man in the box to stop the run game and routes to the middle of the field and Mike Hilton will come in at the nickel at times. We'll use Cover 1, 3 and 5 as our main formations. The goal for our defense is nothing deep, no hero plays and no funny business down the middle, especially with Olave. We are trusting our coverage to stop the deep and middle plays, our front 7 to stop the run and the middle of the field to be a field of landmines.

We may not have the most explosive offense by our standards this week but we feel we can make the most with many high-powered weapons still available, while shackling their offense to tough out win at home with our new palm trees.

Good Luck @Blueand @MWil23. Beware taking our DBs for granted. You guys were too nice and I let it all out earlier in the forums anyways so I'm gonna leave it at that.

I will add that Conner didn't play so Foreman, as noted in the gameplan, takes over his responsibilities and gets more work.

Hoping for a fun/good game. As I forshadowed in the GDT, I wrote this up pre-injuries, so me anticipating your heavy sets and heavy RB usage while @Blue and I opted for a 4-3 and occasional 50 BEAR front despite your plans for the extra big nickel safety was a fun wrinkle. It's a shame that you only opted to use Forman on 3rd downs though. :)

@MWil23 I know he mentioned the third down thing but he never said only on third down. And then there is the above.

40% run while giving Kamara, Singletary, and Foreman the rock "a lot" seems tough. Navigating drunk gameplans though, am I right? :)

@MWil23 you forgot these two. But it’s an RPO so maybe he isn’t counting that? But yes it’s a lot of guys to get significant touches on 40% of run plays.

Yeah like I said, a 40% run but also 5 dudes are getting "a lot of touches" on runs. Regardless, fun matchup, we'll see what the voters decide.

@LAOJoe  This is a yes or no question I don't need any other detail then as simple yes or no.

You are passing the ball 60%, running the ball 40% correct?

You ask someone a question but tell them how they should answer? Let him answer how he wants you don’t have to take into consideration anything you don’t want to.

Yeah he can answer however he wants what I don't want is a bunch of back-and-forth dialog between Cancun and Flint so it's just easier if he keeps his answer simple
