The move includes assuming Hockenson’s fully-guaranteed fifth-year salary of $9.392 million. Which means that the Vikings likely will fill out the rest of the depth chart in 2023 with younger, cheaper players. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/11/01/arrival-of-t-j-hockenson-likely-means-irv-smith-will-move-on-after-2022/ I'd say Smith is gone next year. SemperFeist
I, for one, will also be interested to see which number Hockenson chooses to wear.
WizardHawk
Seems like a big win for Vikes value wise.
SotanKing
Considering Lions 4th Round pick is going to be around 100-110 and Vikings 2nd round pick is going to be around 55-60, feel like the dropoff from Vikes 2nd rounder to Lions 4th rounder in 2023 draft isn't going to be huge.
Sad People
I heard his 5th year option was not picked up, can we pick it up still or how does that work?

It was picked up and the Vikings are on the hook for 9.4m next year.

vike daddy
His recovery timeline leaves the door open for Irv Smith to return to action, especially if the Vikings remain on their current trajectory and make it to the playoffs. The length of the layoff and the possibility for complications in recovery that delay his return could mean that he doesn’t make it back before the season is out. Smith has 22 catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns this season. The 2019 second-round pick missed all of the 2021 season with a knee injury and has 88 catches for 844 yards and nine touchdowns in 36 career games. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/11/01/report-irv-smith-jr-out-8-10-weeks-with-ankle-injury/
The Gnat
I like this move for the Vikings. Smith will be gone, we get Hockenson for another year, maybe longer. The offense doesn't need him, but we need another TE and he will add more to the passing game as well.
vike daddy
The Detroit Lions picked up the fifth-year option on Hockenson's contract on April 26, 2022. In the Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks, Hockenson set the all-time Lions record for receiving yards in a game by a tight end, gaining 179 yards on eight receptions in the 48-45 loss. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._J._Hockenson how long does it take a TE to get up to speed in an O'C Offense? is Hockenson seen as a smart guy, a quick learner? JDBrocks
It's a perfect scheme fit. Hockenson is at his best as an in-line TE in 11 personnel, which is exactly what the Vikings do. Good blocker at the position, and has the size and athleticism to beat LBs and S in the middle of the field. A true do-it-all TE.
