Malaga's mock off season 1.0: FA & Draft

I think with this week's developments it has become an etched in stone reality that we are tearing down the roster. The purpose of this thread is to start thinking about the off season. While I think we are still no more than a 6-7 win team, the acquisition of Chase Claypool should give the O a puncher’s chance to stay in some games the rest of the season, although I wouldn't expect him to see any game action until he learns the playbook and has at least 2 weeks of practice with the 1's.

According to Spotrac & OTC, we should have 115-120M of CAP next plus 8 picks barring any more off season or draft night trades. I think we will fall into the 8-10 pick range which isn’t bad if Claypool shows signs of growth & chemistry with Fields. That takes care part of one glaring need although we should target another WR in the 4th. I won’t go full blown mock off season until probably after week 10 heading into our 11th game before our bye.

But for sh**s & giggles here are some ideas for both the draft & FA:

FA:

1. Orlando Brown LT – Jones has been decent but you can’t avoid an opportunity to lock up one of the best LT’s in the NFL. 5/130M with 65M guaranteed & a 38M million signing bonus. 2023 CAP hit 11M.

2. Bradley Bozeman C – Bozeman is one of the top C’s on the market & he is worth about a 4/32M contract with 18M guaranteed & a 12M signing bonus. 2023 CAP hit 6M.

3. Daron Payne DT – Upgrade 1 to improve a terrible Dline. He is beefy, explosive, and can excel in both stuffing the run & creating an interior pass rush. He will need a Hicks type contract of 4/52M with 30M guaranteed & a 16M signing bonus. 2023 CAP hit 7M.

4. Tremaine Edmunds ILB (Weak side LB) – With Roquan Edmunds is a perfect fit for Flus’ system both as a coverage & run support/rush ILB. He is a huge specimen with excellent speed. I think we can lock him up for 5/95M and 55M guaranteed with a 30M signing bonus. 2023 CAP hit 10M.

5. Mike Gesicki TE – He can be a huge weapon in certain down situation where Getsy goes with a 2 TE set. Kmet hasn’t really impressed and just got his 1st TD since 2020. It will take a bit of coin but Gesicki is the best TE on the market. I think a 4/50M will get it done with 29M guaranteed & a 20M signing bonus. 2023 8M CAP hit.

Draft (1st 2 rounds only)

1. Pick 8-10: DE/Edge Myles Murphy is the 2nd highest rated DE/Edge rusher and has explosiveness, quickness, & strength. He will make an immediate impact on D and will provide pressure from day 1. He has a variety of moves to beat tackles.

2. Balt or NE pick: DT Gervon Dexter will line up next Payne and play the 3Tech role which he has the build, strength, & quickness for. He has played all over the IDL and knows how to exploit single or multiple gap assignments.

A more complete mock later.

Man Orlando Brown scares me tbh. He was given a pass last year but he has been pretty bad in pass pro this year too. If we are keeping the same ground and pound offense then I am going to feel a bit better, but throwing out a massive deal with $30 mil per year (after the 2023 season) shouldn't mean you have a liability to work around IMO.

Definitely like the signings but while we have $120ish mil in cap space you've only used $42 mil for the 2023. Might want to structure it so we pay more up front to take advantage of that.

Like Murphy and I'm super biased with Dexter being a Gator so I love that pick. lol. Dexter isn't the prototypical 3T but I think it would be really cool to match him with Payne. Both are stout enough to be NTs, but both move really well for 315 pounders.  Doesn't really fit with Jauron's desire for stout run stuffers at DT and or Lovie's demand for high end athleticism but still has plus talents for both of them. Either will be hell to block one on one IMO when they are bullrushing the QB. I'd really like to see it.

I'm sorry man, but your FA is just completely unrealistic and crazy

Bozeman was a FA last year and ended up signing a 1/2.8M contract, and suddenly is worth 4/32?

We traded roquan and Flus came out and said his WLB needs to be a guy that has massive ball production, so signing a different off-ball LB with 4 ints, 6.5 sacks, and 2 FF in his 5 year career to a nearly $100M contract is your answer?

5/130 is $26M/year - Orlando brown is currently making $16M/year and there are only 3 tackles total in the league making more than $20M/year, and the highest is Trent freaking Williams making $23M, so you want to pay Brown $3M MORE than that?

the franchise tag for DL is $17M, and daron payne, who is a potential franchise candidate in WSH, is going to sign with us for $13M/year? would be like Quan signing here for $4M less than the LB FT at $14M

now, i don't think your targets are outrageous - i really like Payne especially, and i know you can never really accurately predict them, but even what you have just seems so unrealistic.

I think one of either Payne or Davenport will be Bears next year.

And perhaps Conklin.   2 of those 3 will be our main FA class.  Or if not them other DL and OL.  But those are names that jump out at me right now.

I firmly believe Poles believes in building primarily through trenches O and D.

I hope so. Even if only due to his own time as an OL and to feed his ego, please build the damn lines up. Even having low expectations and knowing this is a tank year this has been kinda difficult to watch.
