Cancun

Offense:

We are really spoiled for choice in how we want to attack this defense this week. There is no legitimate pass rush threat up front, and the secondary lacks playmakers at corner. We are operating out of the pistol and two-back shotgun sets to keep our best offensive players on the field, with the backup receivers mixing in a bit every so often to keep the starters fresh.

We will be rolling with a play-action and motion heavy offense to start the game off, motioning Aaron Jones into the slot regularly to give us an additional receiver while leaving Stevenson in the backfield as a rushing threat. If we get Jones or Schultz on a linebacker who isn’t Shaq Thompson, we’re taking that matchup all day. We’ll also be looking for Stevenson on wheel routes out of the backfield on pass plays, since we expect he’ll be drawing somebody like Logan Wilson or Denzel Perryman in coverage, neither of whom is much good in that department. At receiver, we’re happy to use crossing routes, fades, and other long-developing route concepts given we anticipate having a lot of time in the pocket between the poor pass rush and our own play-action.

We will regularly rely on basic five man pass protection until and unless Hungary starts throwing blitzes at us, as our starting five can more than handle their basic four man rush. This gives us five options on each play, with a focus on going after the corners rather than whomever Harrison Smith is covering (assuming he’s in man and not back in Cover-1). If we get Chuck Clark in man coverage, we’re going after him heavily as he’s allowing 89% of passes to be completed in his coverage.

In the run game, we’re going to pound the middle with Stevenson and work stretch routes with Jones. We want both backs to get double-digit touches (not just rushes) in this game, using the run regularly on first downs early on to set up favorable down and distance. Later in the game when we’ve established a double-digit lead, we’ll work the clock with Stevenson running up the middle to maintain ball control and keep the Hungary offense off the field. Olamide Zaccheus and Elijah Moore will get a couple end-arounds when they’re in the game to keep the defense on their toes, especially since we expect the corners to get up closer to the line when those players are in knowing they aren’t as big of receiving threats as our starters.

Defense:

This week, we get Hungary, who has some pretty good receiving threats with a very poor running game. Joe Mixon comes into the game averaging 3.3 yards per carry this season against our dominant DL unit with quality depth, as well as our linebacking unit. Brian Robinson is averaging 3.2 YPC as well, and you could make the argument that James Robinson is their best running back. So, if he lines up in the backfield, we anticipate the possibility of having to stop him.

Hungary likely wants to control the clock and put Dak into successful situations where not too much is asked of him, as he's not 100% yet, and is more of a game manager at this point of the season.

As a result, we will go out of a base Nickel personnel package, but will match personnel if they decide to go 2 RB and/or 2 TE to a 4-3 look.

We expect that they'll likely try to use Dak some in the running game and likely try to get the ball to their outside and slot skill positions, potentially using some 3 WR base sets with Hockenson as a TE.

Byard will be lined up towards the box/in the box (depending upon personnel groups), and he will be a bit of a roaming box player this week. We like Werner on Hockenson in the underneath game, and he's also athletic enough to account for Dak as a running in any type of run/boot/read option game. We will be using a 3rd safety (Pitre) in cloud and apex situations (depending upon whether or not it's Cover 2 or 4).

We are going to dare Hungary to run between the tackles, because quite frankly, we don't think for one second that they'll have any success whatsoever with their miserable RB situation against our tough as nails defensive front.

As a result, we will be keying on passes on the RPO aspect of things with our apex/slot player and read linebacker, putting stress on Dak to give the ball into the teeth of our interior DL and backside LB or throw into coverage.

We will be playing a combination of Cover 2, Press Man, and Cover 4. We like Cover 2 and press man on early downs with Cover 4 on long yardage situations.

We trust our DL to get a lot of pressure on Dak, so as a whole, we will be utilizing a lot of 4 man rushes with a lot of defensive line stunts mixed in. We will send an occasional blitz from the apex position to either stuff Dak in the backfield if he decides to run or force him to throw into the blitz, where likely Werner  or a Cover 2 CB will be waiting. We will be keeping our DL fresh and rotated throughout the game. On the off chance they run hurry up, we are fine telling our 1 Tech DT to fake cramps every 4 plays and then rotating in a fresh body. Besides, we don't believe they'll be able to consistently move the sticks to effectively run a hurry up offense.

The bottom-line is, we will not be letting those 3 WR beat us this game, and they'll have to give the ball to their RB if they want to win. Frankly, we don't think that group is good enough to beat us with this plan.

Hungary

Offense:

The key to this weeks strategy is to control the clock. We will be implementing a dink and dunk offense Cancun that likes to lean towards zone coverage when facing elite receivers.

To help keep the clock running throughout the game we won't be making substitutions on offense during drives. We will also playing a hurry up offense to keep Cancun's defense on the field. The benefit of the dink and dunk offense is that it draws out drives for longer and limiting Cancun's offensive snaps. There will be lots of drag routes to keep it underneath and gain 5-6 yards at a time.

Thielen will be manning the slot this week and will be going in motion prior to the play to distinguish man vs. zone.  If Cancun is in zone coverages we will use seam and flood routes to test the different levels of the defense.

The RBs will also be utilized out of the backfield. The RBs will be used in the flats and will be the safety valve against zone blitzes.  If Cancun goes heavy zone focus, we will also incorporate WR screens with Lockett.

Against man we will run a lot of verticals on the outside and posts in the slot to try to split their safety coverage.

Adding Scherff this week to our interior helps further solidify our offensive line. His addition comes at a great time as we will have to run the ball a good amount this week. Our RB split this week will be Mixon/B Rob/White. JRob is ailing from a knee injury and will be used sparingly. White will be on the field for 2 minute drill due to his speed and pass catching abilities. On certain plays a guard will pull and help get the RB to the next level. Dak will also be used occasionally in the running game to keep the chains moving.

Hockenson will be another part of our fun offense. He will be my chain mover. Always looking for the sticks to keep the offense moving. He will also be used as a lead blocker in the running game.

Defense:

Primarily we will be running a Cover 1

With Josh Reynolds down this week Cancun is left with just two BDL starting caliber receivers in Sutton (who has been terrible all season) and rookie stud Chris Olave.

Additionally, Cancun's line is just plain bad. Nijman was one of the bottom performers last week, Volson is mediocre, Johnson while having flashes gets beaten often inside if a defensive lineman changes direction which leaves Bak who depends on the week if he is playing and a solid center in Andre James.

So the true question is how does one shut down Cancun's offense?

Your three playmakers here are Mahomes, Jones and Olave.

The answer? Shut down Mahomes targets, send a situational 5th pass rusher inside to Johnson's side to blow up the pocket and have some fun.

New to Hungary this week is Fabian Moreau. Fabian has been rated in the top 10 of shut down corners this season by NFL Next Gen Analytics team. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nfl.com/_amp/2022-nfl-season-s-top-10-shutdown-cornerbacks-eagles-duo-leads-group-sauce-gardn

He has allowed just 35% completions and only 2.7 yards per target. (Thanks for sleeping on him everyone). This week he squares off against the stud Olave which we believe Cancun will target often in their game plan this week. Smith will have the overtop bracket on verticals.

On the flip side McCreary squares off with Sutton who has disappeared. Sutton leads his team in dropped passes this week and we hope one of those drops turn into a pick for McCreary. Sutton is also not a YAC guy (ranked 66th/90 eligible receivers) so we don't see him bailing Mahomes out here.

The leaves Jones and Schultz. Schultz will have LBer coverage from Wilson. Thompson will have either TE2/FB coverage. Perryman will come off for Cameron Sutton in 3 wide.

Clark will move into the box on early downs to key the running game and then robber underneath on obvious passing downs. We will trust Perryman and Thompson to hit the outside runs.

Ignore me, misread the writeup.

Bold of PR to call my offensive line bad when every single member of it would start over his counterpart on PR's line.

Lol Are you living in a dream world where your entire oline actually performed well?

And ends, I don't really have the time these days to have endless debates like we did 10 years ago. 🤣 I do appreciate getting the chance to play @Blue again like the old days.

It's all good, just some long-time rivalry trash talk.

The outcome of this match up should be interesting since, Well at least one team is all about recent production and statistics.

I have not made up my mind yet on this game what I will say is I have read both game plans.  I think Cancun really overlooked the Hungary running game. Sure they mentioned it, but they also made it clear they didnt view it as a threat.

I think Hungarys assessment of both Cancuns offensive line and their weapons on offense was spot on, its something ive been saying all season, beyond Jones & Olave, they dont have a guy on offense at a non-QB position who has consistently shined for them and this week, pending what Olave does, that is especially true.

On the other hand, Hungarys players had a very good week, especially Joe Mixon who had 5 touchdowns by himself. I also disagree with this notion that Hungary doesnt have a good defense. Im not saying they habe the best D in the league, but they have a respectable defense.
