Cancun Kaiju

Offense:

Our top two running backs came into this week with a combined 1350 rushing yards at 5.2 YPC. It is a dominant running game and we’re going to pound it deep into the hole against the bad Dragons.

Our base offense will feature a lead blocker in Juszczyk and Schultz at tight end, usually with both on the weakside of the formation. We want to go heavy rushing to that side early and often, focusing on runs off tackle as well as inside to the center-guard and guard-tackle gaps. Blocking will focus on getting a double team on Dexter Lawrence in particular to move him off his spot and clear running lanes up the middle. Jones and Stevenson will both play heavily this week, and we want to get the two of them 40 combined touches. Yes, 40. We are going to punish this defense up front with ball control offense and put pressure on Russell Wilson to make plays on the other side of the ball with a limited number of drives.

When we do pass, it will be heavily slanted towards play action. A few screen plays to the backs will be used early to get the pass rush off Mahomes and keep the defense on their toes. Following that, we want to get a couple naked bootlegs out to the left side of the formation to take some downfield shots to Olave and Sutton, with Schultz as an option over the middle and a back in the flat. Olave will be targeted heavily in the passing game, as there isn’t a corner on Seoul’s roster who can take him one-on-one. We will throw in a handful of 3 and 4 WR sets to mix things up and get some of Seoul’s inferior DB talent on the field to take advantage of in the passing game, as well as for Rhamondre Stevenson to barrel over in the run game.

Defense:

This week we get Seoul on the road. We anticipate a higher volume of running due to them being handicapped by Russell Wilson, and when they do throw the ball, we expect Kelce to get a lot of targets and to be used regularly. We anticipate a lot of 11 personnel, but we know that they may also try to go heavier with multiple TE looks or even potentially 2 RB/2 RB 2 TE looks.

To combat this, we will match personnel and go nickel/big nickel with 11 personnel, a 4-3 with 12 and 21 personnel, and a 50 Bear Front with 22 personnel, maintaining a box advantage in the running game as well as having the ability to stay in a 2 high safety look, while disguising zone vs. man coverage, as Byard will have some value moving around in and out of the box.

To be clear, Seoul may try to come out throwing more, but we'd welcome that, because we think that they'll do their best to keep Mahomes and Jones off of the field and limit possessions by controlling the clock and shortening the game. They may try to use some no huddle concepts at home, but it'll come down to their ability/inability to convert on 3rd Down as to whether or not that's effective. We don't believe they'll be able to convert as often on 3rd Down to make this a viable or effective gameplan.

From a matchup perspective, we think that our linebackers and safeties match up very well with their RB and TE both in the run and in the pass, and frankly, at this point in his career, Russell Wilson isn't a great athlete, so our DL will be able to keep him in the pocket and force him to beat us with his arm, which we don't think that he can do.

From a coverage standpoint, we will be focusing a lot on taking away the short passes to the outside and the middle of the field, having Kelce covered underneath with a safety cap, daring Wilson to beat us outside the numbers in the intermediate on timing throws. The extra high safety will eliminate the potential of your deeper 1/3 field throws to the outside. If Wilson can beat us in that 15-25 yard window to someone not named Travis Kelce, congratulations.

We like a lot of Tampa 2 concepts to force tight window throws down the seam to Kelce in that 3 man window (LB, both safeties)

We will use this as a mixer to disguise presnap press/Cover 2 to confuse Russ and the offensive coordinator, especially on long yardage situations.

We like the "cone" concepts from our 2 high that frees our ability to utilize Byard as a Robber while putting our corners in the position to cap deeper routes OR play press (Cover 2 Cut as well).

As you can see, presnap there are a lot of looks we can give, while keeping things simple on our end.

OFFENSE

Offensive Strategy:
Formations:  11 Personnel(70%), 12 Personnel(30%)
Scheme:  Pass(60%),  Run(40%)
Tempo:  Normal

Passing:    We’ll come out in 11 Personnel for the majority of this matchup against Cancun.    We want to concentrate on attacking the middle of the Cancun defense.   We are looking to stack Darius Slayton alongside Kelce to take advantage of the extra attention he will draw.    We will work with flood concepts in the passing game, looking to take advantage of Cancun overshading towards specific targets.    Out of the backfield, we will look to target Dameon Pierce and Kenneth Walker, we hope to get them matchup’d against Cancun’s LB in coverage.    Same concepts between 11 and 12 personnel with Freiermuth stacking with Kelce in 12 personnel.

Running:    While we are coming out with a more pass heavy this week, we want to make sure Cancun respects our strong rushing attack.   Pierce and Walker will split backfield duties and we want to make sure each gets a chance to break down the Cancun defense.   In the rushing game, we will go back to our zone concepts and let our mobile OL get out on the move.   We trust our RB’s to always break the first tackle and find the cut back lanes.     Sustain long drives and finish in the end zone.

DEFENSE

Defensive Strategy:

Formations:  Base: 4/3 Under
                       Subpackage:  4/2 Nickel

Passing:   We’ll stick with our base 4/3 for the majority of this matchup, but only rush 4 all game.   We want to run plenty of stunts on the DL to confuse the blocking schemes of Cancun.  Joe Tryon/Frank Clark/Demario Davis will have plenty of rush and short coverage drops in this matchup.   We want to send pressure up the middle, while having 1 of these guys spy on Mahomes.  If he breaks the pocket, we want them sitting ready to attack on roll outs.   Coverage on the back end will rotate between Cover 3/Cover 4/Cover 6.   We realize we aren’t likely to stop Mahomes and company, but we will do our best to force him to sustain long drives that eat up plenty of the clock.

In the off chance we do run man, it will be Cover 1.   The only time we will run strict man assignments will be inside the 10, on 1st and 2nd down.  3rd Downs, we will roll back to our zone concepts.     If Cancun decides to spread us 5 wide inside the 10, we will roll back to zone concepts.

Kaiir Elam -  Courtland Sutton
Trent McDuffie – Chris Olave
Taron Johnson -   WR3/TE
Richie Grant – TE/FB
Tryon/Davis/Clark -  RB     (whomever is not assignment to a stunt/spy)

Rushing:    Cancun brings a strong rushing attack to help out their passing game.   This week we’ll be sticking with our base 4/3 to help account for this rushing attack.    Similar to our passing set up, we want our stunts to help disrupt the rushing attack.   Our concentration with stunts will be to provide push along the interior, forcing Cancun’s running back to bounce.   If they bounce, our Spy and LB’s will be there to attack.

Sub Package Alignment
