1 (4) Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia - Starting 3T. Stud DL to take attention away from Hutch outside. Good at applying pressure, stout in the run game.

1 (18) Joey Porter Jr, CB, Penn State - Starting CB from day 1.

2 (48) Tank Bigsby, RB Auburn - Starting RB with great vision and not afraid of contact. Could make Swift expendable and possible trade bait.

2 (60) Jaylon Jones, CB Texas A & M - Potential starting CB with good tackling ability.

3 (79) Isaiah Land, LB Florida A & M - 6'4" 225lb coverage LB who understand angles, good motor and touch as hell. Think he will show out at the senior bowl.

5 (148) Sataoa Laumea, OG Utah - Starting RG. All Pac 12 lineman twice.

6 (167) Jaxon Kirkland, OT Washington - Backup OT that can also swing inside. Good base, mobility and size. 6'7" 310lbs.

Love those top 3. I'd be shocked if Ringo is there at 18, but with several months to go it could really shake out that way. I'm pretty high on Murphy as well.

When I'm reading or watching draft coverage right now, they use Travon Walker as a comp for Murphy. As we all know, Walker went 1st overall to the Jags last year. If we can pair someone with elite level traits (who still needs some time to develop) with Hutchinson, we could have the makings of an elite level D line. We can still have a role for guys like Paschal and Cominsky while Murphy doesn't have to come in as an every down starter.

It'll be interesting to see how things shake up. We've seen guys like CJ Henderson (or Jeff Okudah) get drafted high and pushing other guys down. Sometimes there isn't a clear and obvious #1 in different draft classes. This years CB group feels like it's that way for now.

You're adding two guys this early in the draft because a) One guy falls to you as BPA (especially in surprising fashion) and b) the guys on your roster are showing you they aren't long-term solutions as starters.

I like this a lot and have done some very similar but going with Antonio Johnson instead of Porter.  I really like his ability to play the nickel and S and support the run with his tackling ability.  Adding him with Forbes/Witherspoon/Hodges-Tomlinson/Williams would be a solid addition to our DBs.  Maybe even two of them with Johnson.

It is funny to me how different the two sites rankings are on some players.  Witherspoon and Williams are ranked 116 and 170 on PFN and 38 and 37 on PFF.  Layden Robinson is 64 on PFN and 165 on PFF.  Jarrett Patterson is 69 on PFN and 248 on PFF.  Tanner McKee is 150 on PFN and 19 on PFF.  I am guessing these will move closer by draft day but shocking how different they are on some of these guys.

I just did a 3 rounder because PFN mock machine was making bizarre picks at #1 and/or #2.

6) Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia: The Bears traded down with the Seahawks (they took Will Anderson but if they're trading up it would likely be for Stroud who went #3). This left Carter available for us in this spot

17) Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon: Gonzalez has really good size for the position. He's above average on all three key categories (from PFF): OVR; Run Defense and Coverage. His zone ranking of 77.1 is similar to Porter's man ranking of 79 while Porter's zone is similar to CG's man ranking (64 vs 62). What solidifies this for me is a couple things - 1) Missed Tackles - CG - 4.29% vs JP - 23.08%; 2) Run Defense - CG - 75.9 vs JP - 53.2; 3) INT/TG - CG 6.9% vs JP - 0%. CG is better in the run, better at takeaways and rarely misses tackles (leading to bigger plays)

47) Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama: This is one part BPA, another part addressing future concerns. We're not sure what the Lions want to do with Swift. Gibbs is getting Alvin Kamara comps and we could potentially see both Swift and Gibbs getting touches in the backfield. Both players are explosive and can contribute in the running game. For a team that wants to run the ball, we'd have one of the strongest backfields in the league. If Swift wants too much money or he doesn't want to come back, we have his replacement already in hand.

59) Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, CB, TCU: He would likely be a guy that plays in the slot. For a smaller statured player, he's graded well in the run and coverage; he has a 4.3% INT/TGT (above average), and only scored against 1.4% of coverage snaps. His run defense grade is just barely under the average (70.5) and his missed tackle rate is under the average at 11.49%.

78) Bralen Trice, Edge, Washington: Trice has the highest pressure % out of all 2023 eligible edge's at 20%. He has the highest hits % and 3rd highest hurries %. He's going to need to work playing against the run and would likely slot in as a pass-rushing specialist.

Yeah, I like PFFs layout better, but PFNs player rankings are closer to my own. And PFF only gives you a set list of players to choose from whereas PFN you can search 400+ prospects.

I really like Antonio Johnson as well. I see him more as a NB/S also. Massive upgrade from Will Harris.

I think PFN updates their mock simulator more frequently pre-draft season than PFF does. That's probably where some of the discrepancy comes from.

I do really like (Antonio) Johnson as well. However, I wonder whether the Lions staff like Harris in his current role more than we do.

Harris grades out pretty well in tackling - is average in run defense and coverage. He has an elite level grade (82.2) in zone coverage (only 52.8 in man).

I think thats about as ideal of a mock as we could get.  I do think Witherspoon will be gone by the early second but if he dropped I would be all for grabbing him there.  I try not to because I dont expect him to be there but it is always enticing. I would like to see a LB drafted but can always bring in someone in FA.
