Panthers waive QB Baker Mayfield; claimed by Rams

I'm not sure Mayfield even has the make up of somebody you want as a backup QB because most teams will have to significantly alter their offense for him to be effective.  Plus he will always believe he should be a starter, and every DC in the league knows to just keep him in the pocket and get your hands up when he's throwing the ball.

His best move might really have been to play 11 games in Cleveland, in an offense he sometimes looked viable in, and showed other teams that he could check his ego enough to take a smaller role in an organization.

Instead he goes to an awful team, gets outplayed by other bad QBs, and his former team looked better with a journeyman backup

He did that here though.  Whatever was the case with Baker behind the scenes in Cleveland, it was not a problem here.  He was a team player through and through and was a good sport about getting benched (twice).

He was pissed off at the coaching staff and FO because supposedly they told him that he was their QB unless they found a clear upgrade.

And there were rumors he kind of wore out his welcome in the locker room. Some of them still liked Baker, but others were pissed at him for a few reasons. How the OBJ thing went down, him calling out Duke Johnson during his contract dispute, calling out Myles Garrett on national TV, etc. Plus I'm sure his play last year didn't win him over in the locker room.

Who knows the whole truth. But him being pissed at the organization plus half the locker room not liking you makes it understandable why he'd want to leave, even if it was probably in his best interest from an on the field perspective to wanna stay and play while Watson was suspended. If he had played well, he might have gotten himself a good contract this offseason. Now he'll likely be looking at backup money.

I'll take your word for it I have not really been following the Panthers, definitely felt like he viewed himself as the franchise in Cleveland when the Watson deal happened.

Incredible how people still believe he can be a starter in this league, Geno situation is making everybody lose their mind lmao (mind you Baker was in a GREAT situation in Cleveland and he still DECLINED)

The NFL is all about situation. Geno is hardly the only example of a guy who flourished in the right situation. (And that's without even seeing if Geno keeps it up.)
