Yep. To consider it, it would have to be an extremely conditional contract with low guarantees. X games played, x catches, etc.

I get that but again a 30 year old WR right now would not be a bad thing at all...we need to give this offence some more veterans in some of these rooms...WR being one of them...Thomas would without doubt be a big risk but when you have the cap space and a rookie QB to develop then you should take risks on such talented players.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/michael-thomas-18996/#:~:text=Current Contract&text=In 2022%2C Thomas will earn,dead cap value of %2438%2C500%2C000

Now this means banking on a $14 mil cap hit in 2023 and then either you restructure and extend or cut him for $14 mil in 2024.

I'd take the gamble just to give Fields a chance at a number one. This year the Bears had like $80mil in dead cap, so one year of $14 mil in dead cap is laughably small.

I have been on the record saying that I would stay away from Thomas for the reasons that others have listed. I understand he is an immense talent but it doesn't matter if he is unable to play. I know we have cap space but that does not mean we need to be irresponsible with it. When in the past has this franchise invested in talented players that were always injured and it has worked out? I'd rather through money at someone like Juju instead. Not the same level of talent but a solid and dependable talent that Fields can throw to.

I think there's more than meets the eye with Michael Thomas. Sure, he was injured, but I think somewhere along the way he became disgruntled, likely after Brees retired and with the coaching change, that whole NO offense has been abysmal. I know it's Andy Dalton under center, but there's no reason guys like Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas should stop producing the way they have. I think Thomas realized he didn't want to be in NO anymore and phoned it in, kind of like Allen Robinson did.

That's a different problem, and who knows if he still has "it" after so much downtime, but I'd still bring him in if the price was right. None of the FA WRs this offseason are going to come without warts.

I would rather have JuJu as well but he won't want to leave KC...why would he? I would even rather trade an early 3rd for Hopkins but again you don't know if that is going to be enough...right now if Thomas becomes a FA he is in a different stratosphere to these other FA WRs...I think at some point you need to aggressively try and find Fields an elite talent and hope the change of scenery is enough to get him over the multiple knocks he has had over the years.

And even of you sign them it doesn't mean you don't still want to try to draft a WR in the next two years. Mooney and Claypool might not get/want to be extended and Jones has all the makings of a deep threat and gadget player, but im not hoping for more than that at the moment.

The most important thing to do is try to develop Fields. If he grows and becomes the guy then your job as a GM became 20 times easier. If you bust with him you're at the mercy of the draft class, drafting teams that also need a QB, and hoping you don't ruin another prospect.

I'm investing heavily over the next two or three years around Fields before I make the HUGE investment that re-signing him would be. Could you imagine him leaving and having a great career elsewhere? Ugh

Watching the Washington vs Dallas game right now...Poles & Flus need to pull a Lovie and show up on Daron Payne's driveway at the start of FA...that dude is a load in the middle and even with Jonathan Allen out he is applying pressure consistently...he is also lining up more at UT with Allen out and is really effective...haven't seen him being moved back in te run game either in the last 2 1/2 quarters against what is a good OL...he would be a game changer inside and if we did pair him with either Carter inside or one of the top 3 edge guys it would make me feel way better about where this defence is going to be come next year.

I like Payne a lot, but I either don't see him getting to be a free agent or the Bears won't pay the top dollar contract he is going to command.
