I didn’t think it would take so much to get to the cap floor but given it is I can’t see how we don’t make a play for DeAndre Hopkins…a bigger contract for a proven player will cut down on just how much you have to spend in FA.

Poles talks a lot about being selective and targeted. Trading for an established WR1 would be exactly that. Hopkins would almost certainly command a contract extension/upgrade given the current market, but if you’re trading for him you’re planning to keep him the next 2 years anyway and we obviously have the cap room.

A few things here

-I think the way Poles is talking, its more like "Were not giving out a Christian Kirk contract", which is very reasonable.

-He really doesnt want to go to market with Free Agents thinking they can just use the Bears as an ATM

-In reality its not going to be that hard to hit the Cap floor, ONE big deal mostly gets us there. Not to mention our draft class might end up costing alot if we rack up some picks.

-Its also why I dont think Whitehair will be dumped, and why I would think Jaylon Johnson is in like for an extension before anyone else (the Receivers)

Found out Hopkins has a notrade clause. Do we really think he wants to jump to a rebuild?

I think a true rebuild is when you don’t have a QB…we are in such a good position where we have a genuine talent at QB as well as a lot of resources to build around him…it’s like Jacksonville from last season to this season except we already have the foundation in place with this coaching staff…our turn around could be just as fast.

Since an extension is probably a must before Hop agrees to any trade he’d get the chance to pick Poles’ mind about it too, maybe talk to Justin and certainly Getsy, etc.

Interestingly enough (because we’ve been here before), Hopkins doesn’t have an agent.

Are you suggesting he’d rather stay home or that he’d rather choose a different team? If he’s looking to win a championship, it won’t happen here. If he’s hoping to earn another decent contract, he’s likelier to get it here than in Arizona with Colt McCoy

can we just sim the playoffs and get to march already?

And then sim next season too to see where our pick will be and if we trade down this year, where that pick with be? I’m so excited for the 2023 and 2024 drafts

But he’ll trade a 2nd rounder for Claypool?

I’d rather have the Kirk contract. He’s a good player and helped in Trevor’s development. I don’t like Poles. I don’t like a move he’s made for you guys

he almost gave Ogunjobi a huge deal last offseason and now he wants to be cheap?

im really concerned for y’all team man. I don’t think Poles had the right plan for what you guys need. You all honestly should not have been this bad this season. He’s not showing he knows how to construct an offense.

again I wanna see Fields be successful so I’m hoping the best for you him, but Poles has concerned me since his first press conference. I think he’s one of those guys who got a job they’re not qualified for because they were on the same team as Pat Mahomes.

If you don’t think he had the right plan then you don’t understand the situation…Poles walked into his interview to be out GM and said the roster sucked and was built incorrectly because we had money tied up in all the wrong places…this season was about getting rid of all the issues…trading two highly paid 30+ pass rushers…trading an off the ball LB wanting $20 million a season…getting rid of aging injury prone players…we spend more money on dead cap than we did on actual contracts…this was the reset year where it is gone to be bad & thankfully we were so bad it now puts us in a position to properly rebuild instead of having yet another middle of the road season…

Poles work as a team builder starts now with the most cap space in the league by a distance…the #1 overall pick & a ton of flexibility to do things the way he wants too…from now is when he should be judged.

I still think he should be held accountable for how little he did to provide a decent platform to evaluate Fields.  The season is over and while it seems like most of us, at the least, think Fields showed enough to build around, there are still loads of people out on him and point to they lack of passing and rate of sacks. Both of those faults would have likely been better, or at least easier to evaluate, if the the pass catching and blocking had been better manned. If (please no) they build up the offense and it's still anemic though the air and they move on from Fields, poles will have wasted yet another year for no good reason.

I've echoed what @Madmike90 has said when we discussed this a while back, and I respect that you and I have differing opinions on him. But I don't think you're looking at his background in KC fully. They didn't "just" get Mahomes, they moved up to snag him because they identified him as a potential HOF talent. They moved and got him after already having a 14 wins season. But that season was in large part due to the talent around Smith too. While Poles was in KC they also drafted Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, Hunt, Marcus Peters, Dee Ford, Fisher, Poe, Rodney Hudson, Justin Houston, etc. They have drafted a lot of good to great to elite talents. Even just from his last year with KC Bolton, Humphrey and Trey Smith are looking really good.

Now are those all Poles' picks directly? No, but he has been around the scouts, the franchise developing, seeing how Reid coaches, how Veach, Dorsey, and Pioli have run their organization.

As far as you saying you don't like a single move he has made, I don't believe that. You would have kept Eddie Goldman? Him letting Hicks walk? You would have kept Bilal Nichols? Given ARob the 3 year $45 mil deal he took for the Rams? Re-signed Andy Dalton rather than let him walk? I'd like you to be more specific about what he did wrong and what he should have done, otherwise its just sensationalism to say the bolded. And what quality is he lacking in to be a GM? He was a scouting coordinator, Director of College Scouting, Ast Director of Player Personnel, Executive Director of Player Personnel, and then took the job here. Clearly from above he has a solid track record for helping build KC beyond just Mahomes.

It was a tank year with a long-term approach. It netted the #1 overall pick and the most cap space in the league by a significant margin. First step was a success, now he has to build the team up. If the Bears aren't an 11 win team in 2023 that doesn't mean its a failure either.
