Should We Be Concerned About Sam Cosmi?

Cosmi was a 2nd round pick out of Texas and is nearing the end of his second season.  So far he started 7 games as a rookie, looking solid for a rookie, then was basically handed the RT starting job before this season started. He played 4 games this year before getting injured again, and struggled quite a bit in those games. After his return from injury he's basically lost his starting role to career journeyman Cornelius Lucas, but has still played around 40-60% of offensive snaps per game since Week 10. He has definitely struggled at times in those appearances (he's credited for allowing 5 sacks this year).  The biggest difference in play between Cosmi and Lucas is in the run game, where Lucas has played like Tarzan to Cosmi's Jane.

So I would like to present a list of questions for anyone who wants to contribute:

1. Should we be penciling in Sam Cosmi as our starting RT next year?

2. Do you think we should bring in competition at RT other than Lucas?

3. Do you think Cosmi would perform better at LT (I throw this out there because he played LT in college and seems to do better in pass protection than run blocking)?

4. Do you think Cosmi should be moved to Guard?

5. Do you think Cosmi should be considered a backup only going forward?

6. Should we consider cutting our losses and shopping Cosmi on the trade market?

I would give Cosmi another shot at right tackle and if he couldn’t compete, I would move him inside to right guard. I don’t think you would get much for him as far as draft picks. I wouldn’t give up on him.
I mean Scherff was a monster in college at tackle and he was moved to right guard. College and Pros two different games.

I’m absolutely concerned.

My hope is that he would benefit from solidifying the RG position with a more reliable player than the revolving door we’ve utilized this season. He really was pretty good last season, and one wonders if that’s because having a stud like Scherff next door simplified his job for him. When you can count on the next man to have his assignment covered — and to chip in with yours at times — that takes a lot of the mental uncertainty out of the process. Now teams are attacking that right side relentlessly because of the weak C and weak RG combo, and that requires a lot more for Cosmi as well.

FA is a little rough (Nate Davis? A guy I liked coming out of college in Dalton Risner?), so it may be a rookie if they’re really looking for a serious influx of talent. Not sure how to handle it, but I also wouldn’t turn down a quality OT prospect if they fell to us — which might involve kicking Cosmi inside.

I think we need 2 new Olineman this offseason.  A starter caliber talent than can play both Guard (to possibly take over the LG spot) and Center (Roullier insurance), and then a starter caliber talent that can play Tackle to compete with Leno/Lucas (recently I'm leaning towards needing to replace Leno more).  I think Cosmi ends up at RG.

I said it before, he deserves the bust label. Can't stay healthy. Inconsistent play when out there. Some flat out TERRIBLE play as well. Some pretty good stuff too, but nothing ever great.

At this point, I don't think they should count on him playing RT for them next year and they should really evaluate that spot as if there was no true starter.

I think Cosmi is talented, but the dude cannot stay on the field. Thats a quick way to be out of a job.

Yes, dude can’t stay healthy so we can’t count on him to be a starter for even 10 games let alone 16 or 17.

We absolutely have to draft a C, G & OT to at the worst develop behind our starters if not one or 2 of them being starters in their own right bc we can’t count on Roullier or Cosmi to stay healthy.

Well for 1, we should definitely re-sign Wes S. As much as all of us would hate it, I’d put $ on Ron re-signing Trai Turner. Those two will compete for the steering RG spot. My hope is that Ron also drafts a C & G early in the draft and the G shows out so well that Trai Turner is expendable.

Also have to take an OT to develop at some point. I’d like it to be round 1 or 2, but doesn’t have to be, we need more Cosmi, Leno & Lucas insurance.
