Week 18 Thread: Whatever. Howell to start. Thoughts and Prayers for Damar Hamlin first and foremost.

Rivera is a freaking joke. There is literally no way he can be the coach next year.

He took no accountability for benching Heinicke for Wentz. When it backfired he doubled down saying he had no regrets. Essentially burying Heinicke in the process.

Now he wants Heinicke to "start" but not finish the game... to me this sounds like his best bet at an apology to #4 more than anything. The only way for Taylor's contract bonuses to trigger is if he wins the games he starts (IIRC), so starting him and playing Howell is his apology.

Taylor won't be on this roster next year. Rivera has on multiple occasions tried to "get better play" from others and he's failed each time.

Howell is the right decision to play, but he should start and finish the game. You already burned your bridge with Heinicke.

I actually think Heinicke will be on our roster next year unless for some crazy reason he gets a good offer to go to another team. As everyone knows & agrees, Taylor is a back up in the league. No way he gets some big $ to go somewhere else.

I think Howell should start too, but the starting Heinicke to let him have his start and his moment does make some sense I guess. I just hope as MKnight pointed out in another thread that Howell gets to play the final 3 quarters & Heinicke just starts and plays the 1 Q, but there are so many variable which could lead them to giving Heinicke more time I think & I hate that.

It just doesn't make any sense for Taylor to play at all imo.

I mean it doesn’t other than they just want to give him the chance to run out of the tunnel as the starter, be named the starter and take the first snap/series as a starter. I think it’s just all about that.

In my mind it's too late for that. But to each their own.

If this team is going to move forward with Howell, Taylor can't be a part of it. Like I've stated, if Howell wins the job next year, and he struggles at all, people are calling for Heinicke and it will ruin Howell. This fan base is so tired of losing they can't handle losing anymore. I love Heinicke as a backup, but I just don't think he can be a part of the team if we are going to try to develop someone. I also think after how he Rivera managed this and the whole organization, I'm not so sure he'll want to be here anymore. Now the backside of that is there anyone else out there that's going to pay him? Not as a starter, but maybe give him a chance to compete for a starting job? I don't think Heinicke is on the table for competing here for a starting job any longer.

Rivera probably just hoping starting Heinicke will allow his magic to rub off on Howell.

Seriously though, super weird.  Just give Howell a full game to play.  You burnt our playoff hopes to evaluate Wentz, now you are gun shy to evaluate Howell fully?  Starting Heinicke sure isn't going to help Heinicke's career to start a meaningless game that he will not control the full outcome of.

I disagree with all of this.  Heinicke has never made a fuss about being benched or being a backup. He seems eternally grateful for us reviving his career and giving him a chance in the NFL.  He's a great backup to have and would be a great mentor to whatever young QB we go with.
