2023 NFL coaching rumors and notes

"Former Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans, the San Francisco 49ers’ highly-rated defensive coordinator, is not expected to pursue the job, according to sources. Ryans once filed a lawsuit against the Texans and the NFL seeking damages and alleging issues with the field surface’s design and construction after suffering a torn Achilles at NRG Stadium on Nov. 2, 2014. Ryans is expected to be picky as he pursues head-coaching opportunities and isn’t in a rush to leave the 49ers’ high-caliber defense."

I feel pretty good about him sticking around SF

Well the interview process started today.   Harbaugh first.

Before ppl wonder why it’s virtual - live in person interviews aren’t allowed this week.   Jan 17 is the first day that’s allowed.   Expect the short list candidates to meet ownership / Paton then.   Fingers crossed.

Doesn't cost picks, has history with Evero, so likely would keep him and DEN can block any DC interviews.   Harbaugh/Evero?   Fingers crossed.

If so, that's gonna leave a stench over the players who came back one more year at Michigan for one more shot at a championship....

2 things mitigate this:

1. The deadline to declare for the draft is January 16, 2023.   As we saw with LSU WR Boutte they can change their minds.  It would be ideal if they pushed it back a week in future years since it’s a day before live in-person interviews start   But presumably ppl would know a second interview was happening and could reconsider declaring.

2. NIL $ may be factoring way more to keep kids in school.   That’s a new X factor.

Before NIL I was always in the leave-early camp.  For a guy like Corum if he’s not getting NIL it’s a financial mistake to stay.   But now it’s a different ballgame.

While Ryans might not pick the Texans, I don't think it's about the lawsuit - per further developments from that specific case:

https://theathletic.com/2749298/2021/08/03/nfl-biz-league-is-back-in-political-contribution-game-demeco-ryans-dropping-injury-lawsuit/?source=user_shared_article

(TL;DR - The Houston Texans don't own the stadium, Harris County does and Harris County settled the case).

The lawsuit initially included the NFL and Houston Texans. But Ryans voluntarily dropped the NFL, and a Texas appeals court in 2018 ruled he would need to take the Texans to arbitration. That left primarily Harris County, the owner of the stadium, a venue management company, and the turf company. The parties filed last week in Texas state court to drop the case.

Ryans declined to comment. His lawyer declined to comment, but when asked if the filings meant a settlement, he replied with a smiley face emoji.

Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation declined to comment.
