You know. It feels like there's less coaching hires made from College these days. Kingsbury and Rhule were the last two I can think of. So I'm not entirely surprised

Put some respeck on Urban Meyer’s name

That's because there’s a rich and long history of Failed College Coaches with absolutely no NFL experience.

The only one off the top of my head with real NFL succes I can remember was Jimmy Johnson. Unless we are counting 2 years of Chip Kelly going 10-6 but destroying a team/organization.

Can anyone name another? I'm honestly drawing  blank?

I don't see Aaron Glenn's name out of the running.. if he gets hired and we're out of good DC hires because of the late process.. 😒

I'm kind of at the same state with Raheem Morris.  If he were hired away, we'd be down to bare bones options of either promoting Eric Henderson or Chris Shula or maybe... maybe trying to bring back Aubrey Pleasant who was once our DB Coach, but either way we'd be looking at someone without any prior playcalling experience.

McCown has been trying to be a HC without coaching experience for 2 off seasons and Jeff Saturday beat him to it without even trying. Good on him to change his path to get there.

100% Being a modern NFL head coach is a grueling, all-in, grind of a job. The biggest issue with the McCown and Saturday candidacies wasn't the lack of experience IMO (though that was close), its that they weren't doing any serious coaching in the interim (Saturday was of a nothingburger uncompetitive high school). McCown literally was just chillin' doing nothing. I can't imagine anyone willing to live that much of a laid back life style for several years has the hustle sigma grindset that being a HC entails. At least McCown is now finally giving it a token effort.

McVay could also just hire a position coach from another staff. It worked well with Staley.

Realizing that, I just don't see many position coaches out there I'm all that keen on (i.e. scheme-compatibility or would bring a scheme that would make better use of what we've got than what we already have, won't require an overhaul of personnel).  Staley had also previously been a DC at the college level, not sure how many current position coaches can say that.

It's not like Staley was a known commodity when McVay hired him. I certainly wouldn't have identified him before we hired him as somebody who would immediately turn around our defense.
