For any Jeff Buckley/Leonard Cohen fans out there...

Well the Vikings switched to a 3-4

We thought that they'd maybe pressure more

But you don't really care for blitzing do ya?

Well it goes like this send the 4th and 5th

Use Harry and ZaDarius Smith

Ed's now fired and the fans scream Hallelujah....

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Halleluja

Well now we need a new DC

One who can gameplan and scheme

You know, one who can find a way to bring home a dubya

Cuz now we have Rodgers and Goff

And Justin Fields who just might go off

But Ed is gone so for now we'll say Halleluja....

Wonder if we’re going to see the same thing as we did during Zimmer’s tenure as HC, changing the coordinator practically every offseason. Hire a young coordinator they probably leave for a HC gig if there’s any success or hire an old guy and you risk having a rigid system in place that isn’t adaptable.

Maybe wrong thread, but if we keep the 3-4, do we strongly consider trading Hunter? Just curious on your thoughts.

I think there will be some action on Hunter regardless, either an extension or a trade. I hadn’t realized that he was 29, going on 30 already. He is solid in a 4-3, maybe we can get more out of him in a 3-4 with. Enter coaching, but I don’t think the scheme we run will necessarily dictate whether he stays or goes. It’ll be the money he wants in an extension or how much we could receive in trade compensation. One thing should be for sure though, and that is that if we switch back to a 4-3 that we’ll move on from Zadarius because he is really only a 3-4 edge who is subpar in the run game… not to mention a big cap savings if we move on from him.

Not likely. Hunter improved significantly as the season went on, and as he got more and more comfortable. And he’s probably still this team’s best defensive player.

Also, his contract makes it tough to trade him, as it would wind up cost the team more in cap space to trade Hunter.

An extension is probably the likeliest outcome.

As of right now, these are the teams the Vikings are competing against for a new defensive coordinator:

Miami
Houston
Atlanta
Cleveland - Jim Schwartz

*Indianapolis
*Arizona
*Denver
*Carolina

* these teams have a DC under contract, but a new head coach could easily be looking for a new DC.

You might also be able to add Dallas, San Francisco, and Philadelphia to the list if either team loses its DC to a HC job.

at least we have a head start on those teams, since we're already looking.

unless.... the prime DC candidates will hold back from taking an offer, as they know others may come later.

Doubtful. And it really doesn’t make sense to switch, either.

Ultimately this team is a multi-front defense. Whether they run a 3-4 base or a 4-3 base, it doesn’t really matter.

Which is sort of why I brought up Nick Rallis as Philly doesn't run either a 3-4 or 4-3 base, it's sort of a hybrid between the 2.  We already have a number of pieces to run a 4-3 and some that can run a 3-4, so why not do both?

No thanks to Jerod Mayo ever. Belichek coaches are always terrible outside of New England, and there's no reason to think otherwise with him.

That generally only applies to HCs, not assistants (the HC we just lost to was a Patriots assistant coach for many years and did a pretty good job as Buffalo OC).  And for what it's worth, Vrabel has done an okay job in Tennessee.
