I usually don’t need to be told and usually it’s a single tap these days.  

ok so, the first time you tap the football, it's actually displaying a "menu" of various like icons (kinda like how facebook works now), but the thing is we only have the one (the football) so you need to select it again to confirm that as the like icon of your choice. Effectively a double tap.

This is all assuming you're on mobile. On PC you just need to click it.
