Jesse Bates pretty much saying he's gone, which gives me the impression he and the team have talked and aren't anywhere close.  I assume Bates wants to be paid as a top 3 safety, and not the top 10ish safety that he has played as the past couple of years.

I found his line about leaving $10 mill on the table hurting his legacy to be weird.  He gave other reasonable things too, like generational wealth and setting up his family, but how does leaving a good team chasing the bag (absolutely his right to do, I'm not judging that) help his legacy if he takes the big bag from a lower tiered team?

Yeah, it's some weird logic he puts out there at times.  I hope 4 years $75 million from the Bears or Texans makes him happier than 4 years $60 million from the Bengals, because that is likely the path he is going to end up on.

I didn't listen to the interview - was he talking about football legacy, or his life legacy?

I'll never fault a guy for chasing the money.  I'd do the same given the same set of circumstances.

It was his exit interview with the media.  He was basically saying how sad it was to essentially be leaving, but the $10 mill difference would hurt his family, long term security, and his legacy.  I absolutely get the first two, and have no problem with it, but the last part is where he lost me.

Pretty sure the money he made this year alone is enough for his family to live comfortably as long as it's invested well and they don't need extravagant items that I'll never comprehend. I do think there's a mutual push from agents and the NFLPA to get the absolute highest contract so it sets up the next guy. Team friendly deals don't seem very common in large part due to this. It's like they feel obligated to set the market every chance they get.

I'm curious if he gets the market he thinks he will.  If he ends up leaving Cincinnati for a doormat for something that ends up being like a $1 million difference per year, was it really worth it.

And the market value is why I can see him actually come back if he doesn't get what his agent is seeking on the open market.  If they are offering $13 per, and his best offer is $14-$15 per but on a bad team right now, I could see it.

Anyone have thoughts on his "legacy" being affected?

I think any offers we make would be significantly lower the longer he waits, as we'll allocate that money elsewhere. If Vonn Bell signs, we may pull any offer.

I expect them to make 1 more run at Bates, when he says no they turn and resign Bell. Pratt is gone as well. I honestly see them bringing Hurst back. Mixon could be cut, but I would be fascinated to see them finally do some restructuring of contracts and maybe keep him but on a deal that gives us more cap room. Consider the same for Collins. But ultimately draft a RB in the mid rounds and a tackle in the first 2.

I'm not sure they bring Mixon back regardless.  If you had just Perine on the roster right now and Mixon was sitting there in FA, you wouldn't go after him.  He doesn't fit the construct of the offense.

They can save money cutting him, and in the cold ruthless sport that is the NFL, they probably should and go get a guy in the draft that fits their shotgun offense.

I get it. And I am not against it. But Perine is a FA this year as well. So I am not sure I am cutting mixon and taking the dead cap hit and paying Perine to come back.

As I've said in other threads the Bengals should have hosting rights to the Kickoff Game next season, even though they didn't make the Super Bowl, to make up for their only home primetime game this season being canceled. A good opponent for this game if the NFL does this (which would be a grand gesture) would be Pittsburgh.
