Nick Caley leaves to join Rams coaching staff as TEs coach

Not a big surprise, get passed over as OC two years in a row and you probably need to go somewhere else to have a chance to move up.

Smart move by him, McVay from what I recall was a TE coach previously.. that gives him a chance to move up in that system that the league loves. I wonder how involved Caley was in trying to implement the outside zone system last year. I remember everyone spoke about how it looked like a McVay system.

The team already added Will Lawing last week to likely be the TE coach so it was probably decided when he didn't become OC that he would be gone.

He has been seen as a rising star for years in the Patriots organization, but he's been passed over for promotions multiple times. Last season McDaniels tried to bring him to Vegas and BB blocked the move, then proceeded to have Patricia run the offense.

It's interesting that he's going to a McVay system when it was reported that the Patriots were trying to run a system like that in training camp. It was a horror show and they scrapped most of it week 1 wasting an entire training camp. We aren't sure how much of that was Caley as they are very secretive about everything.

TE Production has been mediocre the last few years .. Hunter Henry is who he is and Jonnu Smith is forever untapped potential. Most fans blame Caley for their lack of production.. same with the 2 3rd round pick TE's that amounted to nothing. Everyone in the organization loves him though... so that's got to count for something?

He made a smart move going to the Rams, he was never going to move up in New England.

Why would he do that? The point of being a TE coach was to learn the passing game so you can be OC eventually. Unless McVay told him to change roles again.

He's already been an OC previously (at Miami/"The U"), so he's not without playcalling experience.  If a team wanted to hire him as an OC and offer him playcalling responsibilities they could/would and McVay wouldn't stand in his way of taking the gig, if history is any indication.  But he's an Asst. HC who already has a grasp of offenses and offensive schemes, the guy has been getting HC interest and would likely just opt to be one of those HC's who doesn't feel the need to call the plays for his particular leaning for the ball.
