ClutchDJ
Struggling to see how this is a good hire. He has pretty much been a bad DC everywhere he has been at. Even his first stint in Carolina, the defense fell off a cliff midway through the season & they never recovered. I guess because he looked more competent than the ultimate incompetent Matt Rhule?
iknowcool
I wish Wilks the best. Worst-case scenario, he's an amazing leader to have in the locker-room and he is a damn good DB coach. However, I'm not quite sure he's the defensive mind some of you may think he is. I think it is a good hire more for what he brings to the locker-room and the respect he commands, not necessarily for his ability as a defensive play-caller. But I hope I am wrong. He has learned under Rivera for years, so hopefully some of that translates for 49ers fans. Edited February 7, 2023 by iknowcool
AZ_Eaglesfan
Yeah, not sure I like Wilks being the X and O's guy for a team. Seems like a good leader, but the results he has delivered have been inconsistent at best. Obviously working with the Niners D is the dream for just about any D coordinator though so it could work.

DawgX
Yeah, I find this to be a pretty meh hire. Although it feels like every defensive coordinator Shanahan has hired has worked out, so who knows. All I know is that I wasn't remotely impressed with him his one year in Cleveland. TheKillerNacho
Good scheme fit - he should be able to keep them on pace. I guess they aren't too worried about having any defensive assistant poached by DeMeco Ryans, though? Thought they may promote Undlin to prevent him from leaving to be DC of the Texans. Undlin's contract expired yesterday and it's been reported they're not interested in renewing it. He's free to go where he wants now. It does sound like Ryans is interested in taking some defensive assistants, though. I wouldn't be surprised if he took Darryl Tapp to be the DL coach and I believe Defensive QC Stephen Adegoke was Ryans' "eye in the sky" in the coaches box while Ryans called plays from the sideline. He could take him a long to continue that role. Not too many rumors have come out on who Ryans wants to take other than wanting Bobby Slowik to interview for OC job.

Interesting - I didn't know Undlin was available. Might be someone the Dolphins look into too, then. We let our safeties coach, Steve Gregory, go last month, and its one of the only positions we still have vacant...
LeotheLion
The defensive talent on SF is great, but I'd be a bit nervous if I'm a 49ers fan. His reputation as a good DC is primarily built off his interim coaching this year.

This is my thinking as well. Definitely seems like a guy who is more about the Jimmy and Joes than the Xs and Os. Leader of men type.
