biggie.
Let's face it: football can really mess you up physically and mentally. I say if you're smart with your money and didn't blow it on stupid stuff you don't need, I'd retire once my first contract is up or after one or two franchise tags. Even with the rookie wage scale, you're making plenty of money where you can live comfortably. Edited February 26, 2023 by biggie.

BetterCallSaul
These guys know the risks now. They can all make their own informed decisions.
seminoles1
If I'm a 1st round pick? Sure. If I'm a 5th-7th rounder and in line for a big raise? Nah, gimme that 2nd contract.
Trojan
Rookies don't make that kind of money tbh. If you consider how rare talent that can still around multiple years is, the rookie payscale is massively underpaid. It would be really rare to not only be talented enough to be in the NFL, but then to luck into another opportunity to make anywhere near the kind of earning potential.
waterfish_21
Majority of players already do this.
scar988
Controversial rebuttal, 90% of NFL players never see the end of their first contract because they get cut before hand if you look at 90-man training camp rosters over a 3 year period.
incognito_man
This is the absolute worst-case scenario from a money: long-term injury standpoint if you're good enough to be a pro.
DontTazeMeBro
Forget mansions, private jets, IG models. You get a divorce. There goes half of it. You want to send your kids to the best schools? And then if they go to grad school. One of your kids ****s up and kills someone with their car you wanna keep them out of prison? You have some situation where you’re in the hospital for like a month, that could cost a mill. You want your parents to die at home instead of hospice or a nursing home? **** up and get another divorce(no one thinks it’s going to happen to them.) A few million dollars can disappear easily.  And then there’s the fact that a lot of players just like playing football and want to accomplish things instead of just living comfortably.
