Symbolic gestures don’t change reality. *Starting* while the backup does all the actual playing is being benched.

The issue is we don't know that was going to happen. We don't know if Eli was going to get a quarter or a half before they put Geno or Webb in there. The issue was, winning wasn't a priority anymore so Eli didn't like that even if he was having the game of his life he would still get pulled. Either way Eli could have started. He wasn't benched. He just didn't want to be in the rotation while they were evaluating.

Never in the history of football has a Quarterback been pulled while healthy, with the decision being independent of the score, from a game and it not been called a benching. This doesn’t get special considerations. Eli was benched for Geno Smith. It doesn’t matter if that happened at the beginning or end of the game. Eli was asked to sit on the bench while Geno Smith played. That’s being benched.

Eli’s choice to not extend his streak by means of facade merely gave the team more snaps to dole out to others. Every one of those snaps was given to Geno Smith. None went to Webb. None went to a random WR with some passing experience. They all went to Geno Smith. Eli was benched for Geno Smith, and Geno Smith alone.

And Eli wasn't playing well enough to deserve anything else.

Eli was OFFERED the start. If anyone benched Eli, he benched himself. People need to get over this. Eli was going to be the starter. He blindsided everybody because he'd rather sit than accept that the Giants season was over and they were evaluating the rest of their talent. If Eli wanted to start or keep the streak he easily could have.

Ehhh not really. He was essentially being benched just they offered him a courtesy to protect the streak. They benched him because he wasn’t gonna the whole game so at some point he was getting benched. So no Eli didn’t bench himself.
