After redshirting his first year at Washington in 2016, Murphy played in six games with six starts in 2017, missing seven due to injury. He finished the season with 16 tackles and three interceptions. He returned to Washington as a starter in 2018. He was awarded the MVP at the 2018 Pac-12 Football Championship Game after making two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 66-yard touchdown. On January 7, 2019, Murphy announced that he would forgo his remaining two years of eligibility and declare for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Murphy was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. In week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Murphy recorded his first career interception off Jameis Winston in the 30–27 loss.

In Week 7 of the 2020 season against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football, Murphy recorded his first career sack on Russell Wilson during the 37–34 overtime win. He was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list by the team on November 2, 2020,[15] and activated on November 11.

Murphy entered the 2021 season as a starting cornerback for the Cardinals. In Week 3 of the 2021 season, he had two interceptions, including a 29-yard pick-six in a 31-19 win over the Jaguars, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week. He finished the season with 64 tackles and a team-leading 12 passes defensed and four interceptions.

Murphy returned as a starting cornerback for the Cardinals in 2022. In Week 2, he returned a fumble forced by Isaiah Simmons 59 yards for the game-winning touchdown in a 29-23 overtime win against the Raiders. He finished the season with 36 tackles, four passes defensed, and two fumble recoveries through nine starts.

An interesting ripple to watch with Murphy is his ability to rush the passer. Flores likes to use his defensive backs as extra pass rushers, and his newest corner has plenty of experience getting after the quarterback after his time spent with Vance Joseph in Arizona. If Murphy blitzes with regularity, it could be an indication that he will fit better in a slot role, which would hardly be an issue for the Vikings.

Really good signing, up and coming talent who has slot potential if need be or can play on the outside.  Has physical movement skills no CB on the team had last season.  Great signing and was not super expensive, is a pretty solid upgrade over Patrick Peterson.

I would say Byron Murphy is long term potentially better than Bradberry, Sutton and Dean who were all signed for as much or more than he did.  I would have loved Emmanuel Moseley for 1 year $6 mil even with his injury history, dude is a very solid slot corner but Lions got him.

Some slot corners who they could still go out and get and all of them could be pretty cheap.

Myles Bryant: Patriots
Essang Bassey: Broncos
David Long: Rams

Curious how much Brian Flores likes Nik Needham, maybe they could get him for cheap as well.  With Murphy and if they add one more Veteran CB that could be a much improved secondary.  Then they could focus on DL, maybe they would switch to Bresee if Cook is not released.  Or focus on Keion White or Calijah Kancey.  Or Mazi Smith, Ika but that might be a bit high for them in the 1st.

I'm really surprised it only took 2/22 to get him.

I imagine his thought process is he is young, will be 27 when contract is up and in time to cash in on a 3rd contract.

It’s fitting with the market.

Sutton got $11M AAV, and Bradberry got $12.5M AAV.

yeah im not talking about the AAV, moreso the years.

And yeah the market is depressed due to the cb talent in the draft. It's pretty clear with the NFL team's pocketbooks. Especially compared to last year, when you have players like Donte Jackson getting 3/35.
