Good Hundley Bad Hundley (262 MB)

Taking a look at the more interesting plays, not the ones you've already seen on twitter from Ben Fennell, etc with the Cobb TD or the Williams TD.

3-7 nelson 2 yds flat slant

This is a pre-designed flat slant screen.  RRod invents a new way to be penalized, but this just has no chance vs the called defense unless it's an awful broken tackle.  Play zone and make tackles, that's what Pit is about.  Bad Hundley? Bad Mac.

1-10 01 vs cover 2 inc deep williams

First snap from 01 personnel, spread out with no one in backfield.  Hundley totally misses the mismatch even though this clearly defines the read for him.  Defense declares their blitzers and spies (shazier)

It's friggin TJ watt vs Jordy with the safety not paying attention.  CUT IT LOOSE!  3 man rush so Hundley is right to hold it but scrambles too soon to the right which activates shazier.  Throw is not bad to Williams vs an inverted Cover 2, but he's never gonna make that catch. Bad Hundley.

1-10 williams screen 7 yds

Shazier makes an incredible play here and runs about 35 yards on the play.  Meanwhile,  Lane Taylor is blocking no one for about 4 seconds.  Woof.  Turn and find someone!  Williams nice job to evade the CB and make a good gain here.  Shazier makes everyone here look like they are underwater.  There is no one like him.

3-3 davante td stutter go

Nice playcall here, and something they probably picked up on during the game.  Good pass pro, it's standard cover 3 but the CB just bites way too hard on the stutter.  TE is probably also open if that wasn't the case for the first down.  The throw isn't perfect, it's kind of off his back foot, but it's a sure completion which is what you want at this point.  Good Hundley.

1-10 hundley sacked walton

Kendricks is open and Hundley needs to cut it loose.  Come back to this one when you get to the Cobb play for 12, as he does it correctly on that one, but definitely eats a sack he doesn't need to.  This twist from the DT around the edge RUINS lane taylor multiple times in the game, but in this case, it's not on Lane since this is a run block look PA pass.  Hundley needs to cut it loose here.  Bad Hundley.

2-15 inc nelson vs watt

Another 01 personnel look which defines the coverage for Hundley.  He sees Watt vs Nelson, but nelson doesn't really separate and he tries to fit it in there anyway.  This was a needed completion to set up a manageable fg.  Davante is open and uncovered if he moves off of Nelson, but WR vs LB is too tempting.  Eh.  Sometimes they make a play.  This is borderline catchable anyway for Nelson.  Bad Nelson

3-15 sack heyward

Hundley runs right into the Heyward sack here, giving Bak no chance to anchor.  He hits the end of his drop, then moves up even though there's no one around him.  Nelson is going to get open vs Shazier, so just stand there and deliver. Bad Hundley.  Drive killer and 57 yard miss incoming.

2-12 missed cobb end around action

He needs to cut this loose to Cobb, since it's 3v2 out there in the flat.  This play is designed to go to cobb, and it needs to go to cobb.  Run the dang offense.  Bad Hundley.

DzXbKoX.gif

3-12 sack heyward

The Lane Taylor vs Heyward matchup is rough, but he's so far out of position here that he has no chance.  It's 3rd and 12 and we are running 4 verts right into their cover 4 look.  No chance even without early pressure.

uLxUOig.gif

Throwaway, smart by Hundley.  Linsley gets beat across his face at the snap by Heyward.  Good job by hundley to get the ball out.  This is tough since it's a PA pass for linsley, but he doesn't get a hand on him.  No one respects our end around action because it's really really weak.  Good Hundley.

1-10 rrod 25 slot blitz

Here's the 01 personnel package working to Hundley's advantage.  He identifies the slot blitz which Pitt was running all game, and hits RRod for an easy gainer behind shazier who is racing out to cover for the slot blitz.  Good recognition, throw, and decision.  Good Hundley.

1-10 cobb quick 12

Instant pressure and a good find and quick decision by Hundley.  Unlike the pass to Kendricks which was right in front of him, this is much more difficult to process, but he makes the throw after turning around anyway.  Good play design, good throw on the run   Tight WR splits here make it difficult on the corners to identify the responsibilities for cover 3.  Good Hundley.

Axbs1BF.gif

Overload blitz from Pitt on the left side, and Hundley sees the safety come down to cover Cobb, but opts for the low percentage lob to adams.  He's under immediate pressure, so it's not the worst outcome, but at some point you want him to recognize what's going on and check to an in breaking route and punish that safety.  Meh Hundley.

nfckcP2.gif

4-6 complete to adams for the 1st.

Pitt plays 2 man, which is freaking rare, but they are switching the inside/outside routes on the left side.  PIvot route is the perfect call for Adams, but this is still a really tight window.  Great throw, his best of the game.  Good Hundley.

This is the antonio brown catch.

Wanted to call attention to this since it's a great idea by Todd Haley.  GB is really expecting them to attack the middle of the field with 17 seconds and 2 TOs, since they can pretty much stop the clock after each play.  Instead, they go for the sideline on a corner route, something you would expect if they had more time but no TOs.  They totally cross up the expected route combos, and Josh Jones plays this pretty poorly, but he's definitely cheating to the middle of the field and cheating deep.  Jones could have made this look tougher, but that throw was getting by him.  Martavis gets enough attention from HHCD so this is all on Jones.  What a throw by Roeth under pressure from Fackrell.  Play of the year by some amazing players for PItt.  Bad Hundley.

Not sure even what Shazier was doing on that screen to Williams though.   Yeah he ultimately saved a big gain but it also got 7 yards partly because he took such a big loop just to avoid 1 block.

pretty sure he's spying hundley.  When hundley starts to move, he goes into attack mode.  They did it pretty much all game

If Taylor looks to the sideline for a moment instead of towards the middle he could have seen and blocked CB #25 and Williams would have gone 10+ yards easy. Instead Williams has to dodge the CB and that allows Shazier to catch up (which is still pretty incredible)

It looks like Taylor is waiting to see if the ball is thrown so he's not an ineligible down field.

that's definitely what he's doing, but it's not what he should be doing... find williams and find the closest guy to him and take him out once you see williams has the ball

+++++++++++++++++++++

I'm not seeing Linsley getting beat across his face. I'm seeing Hundley with a run/pass option

maybe.  What is kendricks doing?

Looks like he's trying to sell the counter with the option to break off his block and get into the flat if things dissolve into a pass. It just doesn't look like a counter block because Dupree is keyed on Hundley in case of a QB run.

If this is a called pass, Evans should be staying home and helping on Heyward. There's no reason for him to be hunting linebackers down and across the field. That's going too far in selling play action.

it was a PA TE Screen Kendricks gets caught up in the pile and never releases up field. He had 2 reads on the play with the TE #1 and the jet motion into the flat was #2 all based on how the inside backer played the coverage.

That's what I saw as well.

Based on the piss poor effort blocking by Adams and Allison, I almost wonder if the flat was even an option. They both half assed that thing while watching the TE screen.

the first read is to cobb, and it's the right look.  It's 3v2 in the flat.  Seemed like they stopped blocking because they saw the safety wasn't moving so they knew ball not coming?  At first it looks pretty urgent.
