It's like an 8 yard radius he's gonna get at least a hand on ya.

Like I said, at Michigan he was never asked to rush the passer, it’s something that could just be untapped. Let this kid play with and learn from CJ95…FILTHY like pigpen. onejayhawk
Of the guys outside the top 50, the DT I like is Brooks from Bowling Green. He played out of position at DE, sort of like Chris Jones. At 300 pounds, he still has excellent quickness and penetration and the DE time will help his pass rush develpment. Rankings are all over the place and some I have seen omitted him entirely, though that was early in the process. Overall, a lot of rankers--and coaches--don't know what to do with him. I'd love to see what Spags cooked up.

I like how he has lined up like a pass rushing DE and still did his thing at 300lbs, only downside I'm reading is he's pretty short armed and Bowling Green isn't really facing top competition but if he could develope a while I'd be for it if taken at the appropriate round. He seems to be moving up draft boards. CBS has him #43, PFF #56, but others rate him as Edge with much lower scores. Brooks has an odd body type, lacks a clearly defined position, and did not play for a name school. He the sort of player I would hope to get in round #3. I really like the idea of Mazi Smith or Keeanu Benton along the interior of our defensive line. Benton has been known as a strong run defender and anchor but he really seemed to show improvement in his ability to push the pocket and pressure the quarterback on passing downs. I think Benton is likely to go high to mid second round. I could see Smith going earlier than many expect. I have read (for what it's worth) that Mike Tomlin has shown quite a bit of interest in Smith having several meetings with him so far during the draft process. He is definitely an anchor in the mid and while he hasn't generated a ton of interior pressure in college, I think part of that can be based on assignments and role. He does have an intriguing skill set and athleticism that makes you think with a good NFL defensive line coach (which IMO we definitely have in Cullen) he could really add value pushing the pocket. I love the idea of having a young, stout defensive tackle that is good against the run AND gives Steve Spagnoulo some assignment and down-distance versatility by not having to sub out your interior run defender on passing downs. nicfre2011
I like Ole Miss wide receiver Jonathan Mingo as a mid-round option (probably 3rd round for us). He has excellent size, is physical, and I think he has the skillset to project his usage in a role similar to how we used JuJu...once he gets acclimated to the NFL. nicfre2011
Two interesting prospects from a smaller school would be EDGE BJ Thompson and WR/returner Xavier Gipson, both from Stephen F. Austin. According to Tony Pauline, the Chiefs have included Thompson as an official 30 visit. Gibson is really intriguing as a potential late round special teams returner gem. From Tony Pauline: More than two dozen teams were on hand for SFA’s Pro Day — a large number for an FCS school with just two late-round prospects. The wind made the conditions difficult, but there were solid performances. Shrine Bowl participant BJ Thompson performed well despite suffering from food poisoning and being physically ill before the workout. He measured 243 pounds (after vomiting), up six pounds from his Shrine Bowl weight of 238 and 22 more than his season-ending weight of 221. Thompson measured a shade under 6’5 1/2″ at the Shrine Bowl. He touched 37.5″ in the vertical jump and 10’5″ in the broad, despite jumping into a stiff wind. His 40 times ranged from 4.55 to 4.62 seconds. Thompson was put through defensive end and linebacker drills under the watchful eye of the Cincinnati Bengals defensive line coach. He’s already had official top 30 visits with the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions. Xavier Gipson, quite possibly to most underrated wide receiver/return specialist in this year’s draft, also had a good day. He measured slightly over 5’9″ and tipped the scale at 189 pounds, 12 heavier than scouts expected. Gipson then timed as fast as 4.38 seconds in the 40. He looked terrific in receiver and return drills. Gipson’s college stats are pretty astounding — he averaged 18.1 yards per catch on 146 receptions the past three seasons, with 22 TDs. He’s also averaged 20.2 yards on 17 punt returns the past two seasons, with 3 TDs. The Dallas Cowboys are expected to invite Gipson to their local pro day, and he’s drawing a lot of interest from the Chicago Bears.

These are very similar to my thoughts about Smith. When you’re that strong, I think the only reason you haven’t thrown people out of the way, is because that’s not what you were asked to do. If he collapses the pocket and forces the QB out GK and whomever eat, if aQB tries to step up CJ and the Mountain will eat their lunch. Be nice to NOT see CJ doubled every single play. mayanfootball
yeah. Not a fan of all Offensive picks before round 5. This solidifies the offense for sure, but at the expense of defense. The Gibbs picks gives Andy another toy to play with, but what does this do for Pacheco?

Why in the world would we take a second round RB when we still haven’t actually tapped into the potential of our 7th round steal. There’s no defensive help at all and really the only pick I’ve see as an improvement is the tackle because we could use more depth.
