Valhalla Mock Draft MMXXIII: Lions on the Clock (#6)

The Seahawks ended up going with the BPA on the board in Carter.  The now seems to be consensus favorite in the NFC North in 2023, the Detroit Lions, are on the clock with a pick they acquired from the Rams in the Matthew Stafford trade.  

 

1.  Panthers - QB CJ Stroud (Ohio St) (11 votes, 2 for Young and Richardson)

2. Texans - QB Bryce Young (Alabama) (13 votes, 4 for Richardson)

3. Cardinals - Edge Will Anderson, Jr (Alabama) (9 votes, 4 for Carter, 1 for Gonzalez)

4. Colts - QB Anthony Richardson (Florida) (12 votes, 10 for Levis)

5. Seahawks - DT Jalen Carter (Georgia) (10 votes, 4 for Wilson, 3 for others)

I went with Gonzales.

The Lions are making a serious run, so I doubt they go QB here.

I picked Tyree Wilson. A great edge rusher can push them as the easy favorites to win the division.

I went Wilson as well. I think with Okudah they feel like they have something at CB at least. And adding pass rush generally makes so-so CB's look better.

I said Levis. They are pretty stacked talent wise, and taking a risk on Levis with stability at the QB position in Goff makes a ton of sense. Build for long term success.

I agree with those on Levis, makes a lot of sense as the Lions can add to their defense with their 2nd 1st rounder.

Honestly the pick should probably be a QB. Probably not going to be this low any time soon, and I don’t think Goff is really the answer there. But I can’t see that happening. 
 

A DB could have easily been the pick up until free agency. 
 

Wilson is my pick.

If I was the GM and loved Levis, I'd take him..... But I'm not the GM, hence my pick referenced above

This certainly is a pick that could be in play for a trade, as PCP indicated.  Either way though, I think this is one of the first swing picks of the draft, as the Lions could go anywhere.  With the signings of Sutton, Moseley and now CJGJ, they've lessened their need to draft a CB high, although they certainly could do so.  It certainly doesn't bode well for Okudah in Detroit.  Carter obviously would have been a slam dunk for them if he made it to 6, but he didn't, so it is far more likely, if they don't trade down, that they go for another rotational DE to pair with Hutchinson and Paschal.
