MKnight82
Resident Evil 4 is my favorite video game of all time: So the recent remake is a big deal for me. I just got to the castle area so I thought I would post my early thoughts on the remake: - The controls are much tighter than the original and feel like a modern action game. I know some people may have tried the original later in life because of its high reviews but couldn't get passed the old school controls (I'm so used to them they don't bother me but whatever). That is all gone. The controls are polished and should no longer be an issue. - Not sure I'm in love with the Knife having to be repaired. The original really rewarded you for knifing over shooting everything in order to conserve ammo. The knife having to be repaired kind of eliminates that incentive. - Piggybacking on that, there feels like there's too much ammo in this game. It doesn't feel like the "survival" part of the survival horror genre is well represented here. The game feels influenced from the Resident Evil 6 action genre in this capacity. Rarely do I find myself low on ammo which is way different than the original game. I have been playing on Normal difficulty maybe this would chance on Hard mode, but that wasn't in the case in the original either. - The elimination of Ashley having a health bar and just having the threat of her carried away instead is a huge change in the game. Managing her health was a big deal in the original, both tactically during fights and with managing your health herbs and such inventory wise. If you used too much on her you wouldn't have enough for yourself. So IMO this brings the difficulty way down from the original. However, I can understand that some people may have found this part of the game not very fun, and removing it may just be a quality of life thing. It is a HUGE change from the original though. - To offset this change they have added a ton of more minibosses than the original. So this is sort of an offsetting factor from the additional ammo and Ashley not having a health bar. These guys are designed to eat up your bullets and to kill you quickly. It doesn't seem to be a strong enough balancing act though, which again may be better on Hard mode. - The rearranged map and various treasures that can't be accessed until you find certain keys adds an open world factor that is a good addition to the game. So far I'm really enjoying the remake. I will add additional comments once I've finished the game.

elevators_rule
Interesting going back and reading that thread. So many people discredit your rating of RE4... but when it came out, it was certainly considered one of the greatest games ever made. For years afterwards it was on everyone's top 5 or top 10 list, easy. Every game reviewer would compare new action/horror games to RE4. It was in a class of its own. To this day its a fantastic game. Played the remake, and the reviews are spot on. It's probably one of the best remakes of a game I've ever seen. Stays true to the original while updating for modern times, and just enough is different to keep someone who has played it before interested. I like that they removed Ashley's health bar. Definitely changes the game a lot, but I think for the better in terms of fun (albeit, the difficulty does get quite a bit easier due to it). I played on hardcore, and it was pretty perfect in terms of ammo/survival. I always found myself on the cusp of running out, which is how these games should be. Genuinely super happy with the game. 1 or 2 small changes I'd make, but outside of that 10/10 remake.
