I figured as draft time is almost here I’d make a thread for each position/position group where we could discuss guys we particularly like and hope to see in brown and orange next week and I’ll start with DT.

With all of these I’m going to ignore a lot of the top guys or guys who are expected to be out of our range.  Sure Jalen Carter is a great DT prospect, but he’s not making it to where we’re gonna be picking or within a reasonable trade up so there’s no real point in discussing him.

Mazi Smith: I’ve been a big fan of his throughout the process.  He’s limited as far as pass rush potential, but I think he may offer enough to be “fine” on passing downs.  In the run game however he has a chance to be elite. One dimensional run stoppers have limited value, sure, but with as bad as our run defense was last season having a guy who can pair with Tomlinson (and perhaps eventually replace him) to fix the run D would be huge imo. He’s a day 1 rotational guy who fixes a problem.

Keeanu Benton: I know I’m not alone in wondering how he keeps popping up on mock drafts in the R3-4 range, but if he’s there he’s a great pick imo. Maybe not as high of a ceiling as some of the other guys, but looks like a guy who’s gonna play a while.

Gervon Dexter: I’m intrigued by the potential much more than his actual play.  He’s 100% a swing for the fences player, but there are only so many dudes who are 6’6, 320ish dudes who can run a sub 4.9.

Taron Vincent: He went to OSU.  Oh, and he was misused.  They had him playing a lot of nose/2 gapping in a 3-4 base when he’s a much better fit as a 3T in a 1 gap scheme imo.  He’s absolutely a late day 3 guy, but I like the idea of buying the dip on his stock.

So, who ya like?

I really don't like anyone in this draft class other than Carter. Kancey I like from a rush standpoint or if he's anchored next to a solid 1 tech, but he's on the small size.

Breese never really put together the hype for me, maybe that can change.

Mazi Smith I'm kinda undecided on.

I kinda like Benton, I'm fine with Dexter mid round as a homerun pick.

I love him and couldn’t care less about his size.  He’s gonna get taken for some rides in the run game for sure, but he’s gonna be a problem on passing downs.  Dude is gonna change games in that regard.

He’s a rich man’s version of Dexter imo.  All the talent in the world, but never really stayed healthy long enough to put it all together.

Zacch Pickens rules but I don’t think we take him. The D-line class as a whole is pretty top heavy so I don’t know if we even get an opportunity at anyone who will make a difference.

@BetterCallSaul has mentioned him a few times and I’ve yet to check him out.

I feel like I’m alone in thinking this DT class is pretty decent.  Not sure we’re gonna land a star in R3, but k think we could land a couple starting caliber/rotational pieces pretty easily.

It is a good class. Here are the guys I think are going to be solid NFL players:

**80-100 = ELITE
**75-79 = STUD
**70-74 = STARTER
**69-65 = STARTER POTENTIAL
**64-60 = DEPTH/DEVELOPMENTAL
**59-0 = NON NFL TALENT

1. Jalen Carter (83)
2. Calijah Kancey (80)
3. Keeanu Benton (74)
4. Mazi Smith (73)
3. Bryan Breese (72)
5. Siaki Ika (72)
6. Moro Ojomo (71)
7. Adetomiwa Adebawore (71)
8. Zacch Pickens (70)
9. Cory Durden (70)
10. Keion White (69)
11. Nesta Jade Silvera (68)
12. Robert Cooper (68)
13. Byron Young (67)
14. Gervon Dexter (66)
15. Dante Stills (66)
16. Jacob Slade (65)
