incognito_man
This is essentially identical to the 5th year option, isn't it?
berndt_toast
Is it different from the 5th year option being that it is fully guaranteed?

Option was for 20.3 million, so they gave him a couple million upside and in return they can walk away for $7 million cheaper.
incognito_man
Maybe he gets a little more money today that we can somehow squeeze into our cap? He was at a $4mi cap hit, we can't afford much more. But maybe has a higher cash flow this year. So he's trading higher cash today for lower guarantee next year, but also betting on himself a little because it's worth ever so slightly more than the 5th yr option overall (22.5 vs 20.0). Which may all be moot anyway if he does well and we extend him even more before next season starts.

They tore up his rookie deal, so that 13.5 is probably a signing bonus. So he'll count something like 8m on this years cap and 14m on next years, vs 20. They added void years to Savage's 5th year to create room to do this. They can re-sign Savage if he's good and eliminate the voids. Basically, eliminates any chance we'd have to use the franchise tag next year. If they re-sign Savage this saves us space over where we'd be at with Love on the 5th year, if we don't, the voids make us break even. Kind of a 2 for 1 bet, that Love is the long-term starter and Savage will rebound.
Mr. Fussnputz
I betcha if he looks good half way through the season they give him a new long term deal at market value. Whatever that is.

If there's some mechanism in there that reduces the odds of using a franchise tag in the future that could have been a selling point (along with increased cash this year) for Love and his agent.

Not a fan of the void year process...but even if Savage sucks and we need to dump him....his void year dead cap # is more than manageable. vegas492
So...who is up next year that we could be saving that franchise tag for? Oh yah, that was the pretty bad draft. Love, Dillon, Deguara.....

Added some for Love and got some from Savage?

The $5.5 in savings from Savage restructure will go to Love's cap hit this year now. (More or less)
