Rome

Motivation

We are still in the hunt to win our division, but we need to win out.  We will not be able to look past Charleston

Offense

This week we will go more with a ground and pound strategy against an undersized defensive unit who excel in side to side speed.  We are going to kick it 1980s style and run the ball between 30-40 times this game

One of our teams strengths is our offensive line. Even down a few players, we have some maor road graders who play on some of the best running teams in the NFL.  We especially want to run behind the right side of our line as that’s where we feel our best lineman are.  Todd Gurley has been a beast for most of the year behind a resurgent Rams offensive unit.  He will be the focal point of our offense with Peterson coming in to spell him sporadically throughout the game.  Riddick enters on third and distance to give Gurley a small break when needed.  We feel this strategy will work well against a side consisting of Leonard Williams who may be a bit undersized lined up in the middle and Shane Ray who is an abomination against the run.  If we see Ray on the field, we will make sure to run hurry up to limit their ability to get him off the field for an actual defensive end

Both Myles Jack and Lavonte David are athletic marvels as far as speed goes, but we feel having Howard be a lead blocker can wipe these guys out as they are not known for their run stopping either.  ASJ also serves as a lead blocker on sweeps and off tackle plays but the majority of our running is going to go right up the gut.

THis strategy plays into one of Drew Brees’ biggest strengths which is play action passing.  We have two burners on the outside and we should be able to hit a couple big plays over the top against safeties likely keying in on the run. If Drew sees off coverage expect to see some slants and an occasional WR screen to keep the defense on their heels. We welcome back JuJU this week and will rotate him in sporadically in our starting set as well as having him be the main option in three wide looks.  Amendola runs the slot in four wide, Also expect us to take advantage of Peter's over aggressiveness once or twice with a double move on the outside, especially off of play action.  There’s not a defender to key on this week so we feel we just need to be consistent and move the chains

it is a zone or man defense.  We will trust Drew to make the correct audible

TL?DR     More run heavy this week.  Work off of play action.  Long drives that will tire out the defense and keep ours fresh,

Defense

Charleston brings in a hot quarterback this week in Phillip Rivers and even brings his kind of backfield mate in Melvin Gordon (even though Gordon has been losing snaps IRL).

Charleston likes to run a two TE look. We will come out in a base nickel set even though we are going to constantly have 8 men in the box.  We do this because we have to meat wall defenders up front in Brockers and Tomlinson while the Charleston interior leaves much to be desired. We feel that our interior has a huge advantage here and thus we can go lighter on the back end to cover the receiving weapons.  We will rotate our four ends throughout the game to keep them fresh as well as giving the big boys a break on passing downs by bringing in Brown and interior pass rush specialist Ioannidis

Our major plan to stopping the run is blitzing a LB every single play and having the other assigned to Gordon himself with no other responsibilities.  If Gordon stays in to block, the LB will be on a delay blitz or play a middle zone eliminating any slant patterns.  We trust the smarts of our LB’s to make these decisions on the fly, which will help make us less predictable.  Philip Rivers in an excellent quarterback, but he’s never been confused for being mobile so the blitz right up the gut should get him rattled and emotional. With their line’s weakness being up the gut, we feel this is the best route to disrupt both the passing and running game

On the outside, William Jackson is going to get Golden Tate.  Jackson has been amazing in his de facto rookie season and has held down the likes of Antonio Brown and TY Hilton who both compare in style to that of Golden Tate.  Prince Amukamara is having another solid season and he will line up against whoever the number two is for Charleston.  Marlon Humphrey is a physical corner and he lines up over Jimmy Graham on every play.  Humphrey has great coverage skills and is one of the most physical corners in the league already.  We feel he can give Graham some issues despite the lack of bulk.  Chung plays up in the box to again help against the run while also covering Julius Thomas.  Addae plays centerfield and will shade towards any player who has been having trouble in the game though he likely will be keying in on Graham,  When Thomas comes off for a WR, Robley Coleman gets that assignment

TL/DR:  Send the blitz up the middle against a non mobile QB with a weak interior line.  Trust the corners, eliminate Graham from the equation

Charleston

Motivation: We're 5-7 and we're alive in the playoff race, Barely but we're hanging on and determined to beat Rome after last season's embarassing week 12 loss at home. We're going to give it our all against Rome and punish them for last season.

Charleston Offensive Strategy: We're going to come out and pick apart Rome'ss secondary and use our running game to wear them out later in the game.

The Passing Strategy: We'll feature 2 TE sets as our base offense and we'll make sure to get Graham and Thomas involved heavily in the passing game and the running game, I'd expect Graham will get 10+ targets and be Rivers main threat in the passing game. Golden Tate and friends should also get quite a few looks and we'll make sure to use Gordon as much as possible before he tears his ACL. Rome's secondary boasts a pretty solid underwhelming secondary outside of Jenkins and we should be able to take advantage of that, however their D-line and LBs are fairly good so we'll try and make adjustments based on what they show us on the field. With Rivers playing as well as he is we won't be afraid to take deep shots against Rome's defense and take advantage of their mistmatches on defense. We'll make sure to feed Gordon as well and get Graham his 10+ Targets since rome has no one capable of covering him.

The Running Strategy: We're going to come out running the ball quite a bit and use Gordon+Murray as the gears to grind out Rome's D-line so they'll tire out quicker and we can take advantage of that in the second half, I'd expect my o-line to keep Rivers well protected and open some decent holes for my RBs along with bulldozing their LBs.

TDLR: Run the Ball, Throw the Ball, Win.

Charleston Defensive Strategy: Shut down the run, Control the LOS, Get Pressure on Breesus, Bottle Up Gurley.

The Defensive Passing Strategy: Marcus Peters will cover their no.1 WR, Brandon Carr will cover their no.2 WR, Stephon Gilmore will man the slot and we'll make sure to try and take away Rome's leftover WRs in the passing game, I'd like to point out the fact Rome is without it's two best (aerial) weapons on offense and I'd expect they'll move towards a more run focused approach because of this and we'll make adjustments for that. We'll play a variety of coverages and mix it up with some man and zone and we'll use hyde as a dime DB on occassion as well, Brees is excellent at finding holes in zone coverage so we'll mostly be playing man coverage but we will mix it up on occasion.

The Run Defense: We'll make sure to shut down Rome's running game and focus on getting pressure on Bressus, we'll rotate our d-line to keep them fresh and adjust our defensive formation based on what is needed for the situation. We'll also rotate Shane Ray in with Mario Addison on obvious running downs and use Ray more as a stand up rush linebacker to take advantage of his talent more so he can get after Brees. With Rome most likely moving to a more run based offense to make up for the fact they lost their top 2 WRs this week we'll focus on shutting down Gurley in the running game and passing game.

TDLR: Stop the run, Control the LOS, Get turnovers.

You're going to Blitz a LB every single play meaning you're rushing 5 on every play depending on what gordon does? Phillip Rivers would immediately notice that and make the adjustments so they can take advantage of that.

You're going to put a rookie CB on Jimmy Graham...I mean you don't really have anyone else who can cover him.

Oh boy.

yep, i'm gonna trust my guys to cover golden tate, randall cobb and julius thomas enough with physical coverage to have the blitz get home.  If you keep  Gordon in, thats just an extra sixth blitzer I get to send.  And I'm also gonna trust a good corner with help over the top against Graham.  Don't see the issue there

Maybe you'll hit one or two deep balls, but that's all your offense will be able to muster.  With Matthrews inactive this week, mone of your WR are really that big of deep threats (wright leads your team in yards per reception with 11.2, good for 80th in the NFL) , mostly underneath route runners so this should work.

Well damn. While I don't like blitzing every down I love Humphrey on Graham and allowing the second LB to spy Gordon. I think Charleston said the right things on defense as well. At the end of the day I'm going to give this one to Rome based on the strength of their OL.

It should work in theory but when you Blitz 5-6 EVERY play that leaves people open especially on deep shots, that's not going to work all the time and we'll quickly figure it out and make you pay for it.

Doesn't matter if my WRs are deep threats you're only committing 5-6 people to cover every play, Someone's gonna get open against that. Plus YPC doesn't mean I can't take deep shots to Thomas/Graham who could win jump balls over your shorter CBs.

I see massive match up issues for Rome here....Blitzing a LB on every play isn't going to end well against a veteran QB like Rivers. it might for the first half but they'll make adjustments and eventually figure out the Gordon thing as well.

Then trying to cover Graham with a rookie CB who IMO is playing pretty well but Graham is still a top 5 TE and I don't see Humphrey being capable of covering him even with some occasional help over the top.

On the offensive side going run heavy with Gurley is smart but Charleston has a good run defense and Marcus Peters will shut down whoever he's covering. Brees is Brees and will get his yards but he really doesn't have any weapons outside of some solid TEs and deep threats to consistently beat a good Charleston secondary.

23-20 Dingos. This is a close game and probably the best game of the week but Rome missing it's top two WRs is a killer here, if Rome had one or both of them I'd vote for them.
