NFL changes kickoffs to allow for fair catches to be brought to 25 yard line

Fine with me. It still makes me wonder how many of those returners roll the dice because they need a roster spot...or if you'll start seeing some rostered players who aren't specialists back there to just more or less catch the ball/fair catch it 90+%  of the time.

Rich McKay, chairman of the NFL's competition committee, told NFL Network's Judy Battista. "The concussion rate on the play has gone up. It's gone up because the ball is being returned more by kicks that are being hung inside the 5-yard line. College made this rule change in maybe 2018 or 2019. We looked at their data and said, you know what, this is the right thing to do now."

McKay and NFL executive Jeff Miller said Tuesday that their modeling says the kickoff return rate will decrease from 38% to 31% and the concussion rate will drop 15% due to the approved proposal.

Smart, and good news. Silly that the league let the hanging kickoff strategy last as long as it did.

Next on the docket, getting rid of TNF at the NFL level and making Thursday Night's great again.

Yeah I mean it goes without saying that the NFL doesn't give half a flying **** about player safety for the sake of it, and it's all about limiting legal liability.

But, "hey, we reviewed the data and saw our rules increased concussion rate, while the NCAA rules decreased it, so we're gonna do what they do" is smart.

When I saw this last night I thought it applied to punts too and thought this was basically the nail in the coffin for good punters, pin them inside the 5 just to have a FC bring it back to the 25 lol

But they cant call for a fair catch after starting to run right?

I mean, it would be laughable to let a returner start running only to call for a fair catch when he realizes he is gonna get obliterated at the 15.

Out of curiosity...how exactly does one "fair catch" a ball that he's already caught and started to run?

Why does the NFL still want kickoffs to be a thing, aside from gifting themselves an extra commercial break? That has to be the only reason at this point. Otherwise they're completely useless.

They haven't found a good "onside kick alternative" if we're being completely honest. The 4th and 20 from your own 30/35 proposal is good on paper until you have a DPI/illegal contact penalty.
