mission27
This is exactly why teams are always willing to listen to offers on any player and are constantly putting out feelers on the most ridiculous trade ideas. There's no downside. You might as well pick up the phone and find out.

The incremental cost of engaging with a team on trade talks is extremely low compared to the potential upside, really just a few phone calls and maybe a computer monkey to run some numbers, especially when everyone on the planet already knows you are shopping the player so there's really no downside from a story leaking. And there's no reason to believe the Marlins passed up a 'sure thing' $205K for a risky $206K... if that were the case, sure, that's stupid and a waste of time. But everything we've heard says the Yankees really weren't serious about Stanton, were more focused on Ohtani, and were unwilling to come anywhere close to the Marlins price on him. They tried to get a deal done with a more serious bidder, it didn't work out, so they moved on Plan B. Seems perfectly rational. Yep. "Do this thing that might help and can't hurt" is only controversial if you want to argue for the sake of arguing.

So he really wasn't an option, to be honest. Dombrowski's hands are kind of tied at this point because of bad contracts and a ton of arb eligible players. If they can land Martinez, this off-season is a huge win. Like heck they didn't. Stanton's contract is actually leaning team friendly given what he can do for them. Given what Harper and Machado are going to make next year, Stanton's contract is going to look pretty reasonable. That said there are teams who can't afford it, which is a joke because they can. But they of course say they can't. The fault in Stanton's contract is his no trade clause. Those shouldn't be in any contract IMO. The 5/10 rights cover that from the player perspective.
