Jameson Williams - Is He More of a "Project" Than We Thought?

I have been trying to keep up with the coverage on Jameson Williams in OTAs and now in mini-camp.  His speed and athletic ability always stand out.  It seems quite a lot of stuff has been written on his "attention to detail" and route running.  The good news is that a lot of it is how much he has improved in these areas.  However, it seems like he is starting a lot further behind the power curve in these areas that what a lot of folks expected (myself included).  His potential is through the roof and if he stays healthy he will probably make his fair share of big plays this year but it seems like expecting him to grow into a true #1WR/alpha dog might not happen until next season.  Am I being overly pessimistic?  Thoughts?

I think its far too early to make accurate assumptions to be honest.  This is his first offseason participating in drills, and young guys often have off days and stretches.  A couple of year sago Jamar Chase was a bust candidate because he dropped so many balls in camp and the preseason.  Williams had a great day yesterday, and can build on that quickly IMO.  My biggest concern is his chemistry with Goff and Goff's ability to take advantage of the deep ball with him.  It sounds like he has more chemistry with Sudfeld which is no good but also there is plenty of time to work on things with Goff.

I feel like Jamo has gotten a lot of unnecessary criticism for two bad moves, liking the Lamar to Detroit tweet and the gambling suspension.  The tweet is whatever, i can understand why young guys would be excited about the thought of playing with Lamar especially when the media talk all offseason is if Goff is good enough or if we should have drafted a QB.  The gambling was a technicality and he should have his suspension reduced.  Its crazy the league takes a harder stance on gambling on non-nfl games which is legal than they do on steroid/banned substance use.  But that suspension has made people immediately think Jamo is a problem child and everything he does is scrutinized more because of it.  From everything I have read he is a hard worker and is coachable and I will give him the proper amount of time before worrying about his impact.

Jamarr Chase did have a problem with drops early on so I am not so concerned about that.  The route precision bears watching.  If he becomes a really good route runner his physical gifts will make him a complete nightmare for opposing defenses.

I don't think he is a problem-child but I do think that maybe he isn't nearly as polished as folks thought.  Hopefully a full-off-season will correct a lot of those issues.

He had some issues on his first couple of days of OTA's.  He struggled with route running after being out for a year with a leg injury in which he couldn't run and cut for a long time.  In the practice weds he was said to be the best player and yesterday he was open often but had 2 drops although one was behind him and the other was high.  So my big thing is just to calm down on these early reports and wait and see during games.

Don't get me wrong, I am not necessarily down on Jameson Williams.  I just think he is still transitioning from being a guy with tremendous physical tools to a complete WR.  I think a lot of people thought he would be further along with some of this stuff but he isn't.  To his credit, he is working hard and showing significant improvement.  Hopefully, he will continue to build on his improvements when training camp starts.
