Chase Young - Do We Really Need To Make A Move For Him?

A lot of the national pundits are linking the Lions with the seemingly available but often-injured EDGE Chase Young.  Personally, I think this is just a bunch of noise made up by the national media.  When I look at the Lions roster I see Josh Pascal, James Houston, John Cominsky, Romeo Okwara, Charles Harris and Julian Okwara as hold-overs from last year plus some lesser-know players we are carrying on the roster right now.  It seems like we might get some pass-rush/blitz juice from LB Jack Campbell and maybe some CB/secondary blitzing also.  I don't see a need to make a move for Chase Young unless he have a significant injury.  How does everyone else see this proposal that is making the rounds?

Honestly, if it makes the team better then do it. If not, then don't. I feel like we are at a point where we don't have to mess with a whole lot. If you have the ability to improve your team without financially hampering it then go for it. Chase Young has talent, and if he can be had at a discounted price AND can at some point be on the field then great. I'm always for a very deep DL rotation. Keep 'em coming at you for four quarters without slowing down. If Young can provide that, then why not?

If they are trading him similarly to what we traded Okudah for, I would do it.  If they want more than a 3rd, hard pass at this point.  I think our DE's are solid but could be better.  Harris and Okwara are aging and injured as well.  Young has potential but very well could end up being a Clowney type player which is solid but never living up to the draft hype.

The Clowney comparison seems pretty accurate as a best-case scenario.

I wouldn't say best case scenario.  Young's main issue has been availability.  If on the field, he has been good.  He didn't match his elite sack numbers from his rookie year but still played well before his injury in 21. He has loads of potential still and could reach it given his main injury was a knee and not an Achilles like Okudah.   Its likely why he wont be traded for cheap and if he bounces back he will likely get a huge contract.  Its a risk Washington was willing to take because his 5th year option was already inflated due to him making the Pro Bowl as a rookie.

As someone who is a former Michigander but now lives in Northern VA, Chase Young has been a big topic of discussion.  One of the criticisms, which was valid was that he really didn't work to get better in years two and three.  He was playing on a line with Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne but wasn't nearly as impactful even when he was healthy.  Maybe the drop-off was due to injuries.  It is hard to tell.  Maybe he does potential but the Lions have been pretty consistent about wanting players that don't have a lot of questions around their work ethic.  I think there is enough concern with that to make them pass on Chase Young even if he is available.
