Rookies and Next Steppers

With this being the calm before the storm AND my school year has concluded, I turn my attention to the upcoming season.

This thread is about which player(s) are you most excited about seeing this year. Could be rookies, could be 2nd or 3rd year guys taking that next step to reaching their potential.

Also, after watching video on them, who do they remind you of?

Here I go:

1. D. Overshown LB.

I have to say at first I wasn't too excited about him. I really didn't know much about him. But after watching some footage of him I totally see him playing a Darren Woodson on type role on the team. He seems a bit undersized to be taking on 300 lb olinemen. He is fast and seems to have good instincts to the ball. And if I'm not mistaken, Woodson was a LB  when we drafted him. How great would an addition like that be to our secondary and pass rush?

2. Duece Vaughn RB.

I have always loved watching a good running game. It has so many positive effects on the game when it is clicking. It protects a QB from a lethal pass rush, it sets up the passing game, it controls or kills the clock late in close games. I get this kid is small, but his vision and balance (2 of THEE most important elements to the position) are off the charts. Of course everyone sees Darren Sproles as do I. But what a safety valve for Prescott in pressure situations. I'm totally stoked for this kid.

3. Sam Williams DE.

With this being his 2nd year, I would LOVE to see him take the next step and create match up issues for opposing Olines. Parsons, Lawrence, Williams, you can't double them all.

It would be great to see him develop like R. Gregory was but without the drama.

Sam Williams should be a stud. The list of edges with his athletic profile and college production is exceedingly small, and filled with Pro Bowlers. Add in his extremely impressive per-snap production as a rookie, and his arrow is pointing up higher than perhaps anyone else on the roster.

That said, I’m not as confident about the “no drama” as you. Indefinitely suspended in college for SA, nearly killed himself in a car accident driving 100mph as a rookie. Dude has growing up to do.

Thinking about the intersection of the Venn diagram of Cowboys big roster building questions and potential on-roster answers, two names come to mind: Jalen Tolbert and Matt Waletzko.

They won’t have enough opportunity to truly break out, but enough development out of them in 2023 to trust them with WR3 and RT in 2024 would alleviate so much pressure.

Dude, I forgot all about them. Yeah, this really is an important time for the near future of this team. If these picks really start to hit, this team will have a great deal of depth and a solid core, not only now but for the next 3 to 5 years.

It should be fun to watch, at least I hope.

I like Lamb/Cooks/Gallup to operate as our Top 3 for the next two years, but generally agreed. Maybe we get to a situation like Pollard-Zeke last year with Tolbert and Gallup- would be ideal compared to the possibility of JT being a complete bust.

I love the potential of this group. However, I do have some concerns.

1. Is the loss of Schultz going to impact the WR game? Like it or not, Schultz was a go-to guy. He commanded attention from the LB and DBs.

2. Can Prescott read and react fast enough to maximize this skill set to its full potential?

After studying the Div loss to SF a hundred times, I noticed plays where Prescott was indecisive leading to missed opportunities and turnovers. In my humble opinion, he needs to be quicker with his decision making and trust his instincts more.

But I do love the potential this group has.

I hope you’re right, but I’m in believe it when I see it mode with Gallup. He was one of the least efficient pass catchers in football last year. I’m finding it hard to believe they’ll choose to keep him over $9.5M in cap savings next offseason.
