Do the Chiefs have a Defense Worthy of Mahomes?

They have invested a lot of draft capital recently, particularly in 2022.

Willie Gay - 2020 2nd
L'Jarius Sneed - 2020 4th
Michael Danna - 2020 5th
Tershawn Warton - 2020 UDFA
Nick Bolton - 2021 2nd
Trent McDuffie - 2022 1st
George Karlaftis - 2022 1st
Bryan Cook - 2022 2nd
Leo Chenal - 2022 3rd
Joshua Williams - 2022 4th
Jaylen Watson - 2022 7th
Felix Anudike-Uzomah - 2023 1st

FA signings of note
2022 - S Justin Reid
2023 - DL Charles Omenihu
2023 - LB Drue Tranquill
2023 - Mike Edwards

Chris Jones is the only real holdover from the 2019 SB team, but that is a hell of a nice way to start.

DL: Jones, Karlaftis, Omenihu, Danna, Wharton, FAU
LB: Gay, Bolton, Tranquill, Chenal
S: Reid, Cook, Edwards
CB: Sneed, McDuffie, Willams, Watson

Other than Jones, the old man in this group is Drue Tranquill at 27. They are young, but other than the newbies, every one of these players has had playoff success. Just how good can they be in 2023?

They have a good defense. One with a good bit of young ascending talent too. Mahomes is on a different level, so no, the defense isn’t up to par. The defense is good enough with Mahomes to win multiple championships, if that’s what you mean. If Mahomes somehow regressed to the mean, no. The Chiefs would win 9-10 games.

What do you mean by regress to the mean?

Do you mean a Dereck Carr, Ryan Tannehill, Dak Prescott level? If so, why only 9-10 games?

He won 2 Super Bowls with his defenses

If by “worthy of” you mean equal to, definitely not. We’d have elite offenses and defenses every year if that were the case

But the defense should only improve on 2022, can’t wait till September

Because your offense would be pretty bleh. Yes, a middling QB. Obviously not gonna happen, but KC would be out of the title contender window without Mahomes.

Then you overshot your mark.

Out of title contention can still be 11-12 wins. A team with 9-10 wins is lucky to make the playoffs.

I think you underestimate the KC offense with an average QB. Mahomes is the juice that makes it #1 but with any competent QB it's still top 10.  Look where it was before Mahomes with Alex Smith at QB.

Yes @onejayhawk the Chiefs have a good defense. What even is the point of this thread?

That does not really answer the question.

Will the defense be at least comparable to the offense? Last season the offense was elite and the defense was a bit above average.

Mahomes is a player. These defensive guys are players, too. I don’t get all the “deserve” “I feel sorry for” and “worthy” sentiments I hear and only hear for QB’s.

Cardinals fans use that term for WR, DE, and S, too. Two of those guys are now retired.

Other thread ideas:

(1) Can the Buffalo defense throw a ball as far as Josh Allen?

(2) Is J.K. Dobbins an above-average run blocker? (Poll)

(3) What draft picks would the Rams have traded for Stetson Bennett if he was on the Lions?

(4) Will NFL color commentators bring up mayonnaise coffee in every nationally-televised Titans game? (Poll)

(5) Who wins the NFC South? (No poll)

Yeah. Which is where KC would be without a good QB. As would most NFL teams. It’s not a shot at your team dude.

Alex Smith had Tyreek Hill to play with. It makes any QB look competent. But I’m not gonna argue with the guy who made this thread to pimp his team some more and argue with anyone who disagrees.

If you mean 11-12 wins, OK. If not, then we disagree.

Tyreek was still a punt and kick returner in 2016. He was a 1000-yard receiver in 2017 but his breakout season as WR was 2018 with Mahomes. The offense improved from #5 to #1 that year and Mahomes was MVP.

That said, the offense was already top 5 before Mahomes took over. Give Reid, Kelce and the OL more credit.

Hey now, this would actually be a good thread. Don't go lumping it in with that trash.
