NFL Media reports that Hunter and the Vikings have agreed to a new one-year deal to take the place of the one that was set to pay him $5.5 million this season. The new deal guarantees Hunter $17 million and is worth up to $20 million.

Per the report, the deal also includes a clause barring the Vikings from using the franchise tag at Hunter after this season.

Makes me wonder if we will trade him later on in the year to a team wanting to get over the hump in the playoffs. Vikings arent in a pickle of needing to trade him now and may be accepting a lower offer then wed get later on in the year Hunter gets his money and plays.

Hunter is one of the most underrated edge rushers in the NFL.  When he is healthy there is no question he is among the best.

It was a long time ago but IIRC he was the fastest player ever to reach 50 sacks in their career.

I checked Reggie White real quick to see if easily disproven, and Reggie White was a season faster.

This is the only scenario that makes sense or this deal is beyond stupid after giving him a No Tag Clause for next year.

However what's the endgame here, really?

He ballsout, loves being a Viking, Minnesota is more then willing to give him 27-30M a year come FA? Whatever that market number will be post/pre Bosa/Parsons?

Trade him for a 2024 3rd "Playoff rental" meaning the Vikings season is most definitely over? The team trading can't negotiate a long term extension contingent upon the trade, already  have it in place. So any idea of a 1st or more is a pipe dream and will never happen.

Lose him in FA, wait a year and collect a 2025 3rd rd Comp?

Honestly don't get the No Tag Clause, from a Organizational standpoint? 🤷‍♂️ Great deal by Hunter!

Maybe thats what it was. I know he set some sort of record that involved 50 sacks i just cant really remember.

Not bad for a player who had 4.5 career sacks in college, and only 1.5 of those came in his final year. (He had 13 TFL that year though)

Agreed. I remember reading that it was the way he was used at LSU and his specific “job” on that defense there and it obviously wasn’t rushing the passer.

Why wouldn’t the team trading for him not be able to negotiate/ work on a long term deal with him?

Are teams allowed to sign a player to multiple (2 seperate) new contracts in the same season? Thought that wasn't allowed?

Dunno. I don’t see why a team couldn’t negotiate a long term deal with him if they traded for him or see why the Vikings couldn’t continue to try and work out a long term contract with him throughout the year. But I also don’t follow the rules that’s closely when it comes to contracts and such.

Me neither 🤷‍♂️, Vikings can't but maybe another team can? Doubt it though.

That cannot happen; the Collective Bargaining Agreement addresses it with this sentence in Article 10, Section 2(k): “After [July 15], the player may sign only a one-year Player Contract with his Prior Club for that season, and such Player Contract may not be extended until after the Club's last regular season game of ...Jul 17, 2023
