Jonathan Taylor's Value...to the development of Anthony Richardson?

So this whole thing is getting pretty ugly, not sure if he sits out the year or if he gets traded and we may lose a whole year of getting an understanding of what Richardson can actually do...in my eyes Richardson could have a rookie year similar to Justin Fields where you waste his rookie season because the situation around him is so bad you dont know what exactly you have. With a guy like JT, you certainly prop him up some, and give him a better floor. Isnt it possible his rookie season is so bad that they take a QB next year but unfairly since the weapons around him besides Pittman arent very good? Isnt there value in JT for the development of AR that isnt being factored in?

While I think Fields is more polished than Richardson (by a bit, too) I do think that Richardson still has a much better situation to rely on - even if Ryan Kelly and Quentin Nelson aren’t as good as their contracts might indicate, they’re still higher end IOL in this league. Michael Pittman Jr and Alex Pierce are absolutely better than any WR Fields has thrown to in an actual game (and they’re really not THAT far off from DJ Moore - Moore is better, but it’s not a significant gap either). Those two along with Josh Downs are better than pretty much every other WR on the Bears (Downs and Chase Claypool might be a push).

I agree that the floor is bottomed out without JT - this could be a disaster. But, between the WR options along with a good OL, and a HC who understands how to hide a QB behind his athletic ability until they’re ready to take the reigns, the ceiling for Richardson doesn’t really change.

I think Richardson could be very similar to what Daniel Jones was for NY - controlled passing that doesn’t really look great, a lower completion rate, but much greater production on the ground as a runner. Whether or not that’s great for W/L is really dependent on the supporting talent - they don’t have a Saquan with JT sitting, so it might not translate to a big win total, but it’s still a solid performance.

What the Colts are doing with Taylor is fine, IMO. I’m not giving him a mega deal either. Taylor would certainly help Richardson a lot, but that doesn’t mean you just pay him whatever he wants. Dude has a lot of mileage when you take into account his college days.

Making it a media circus is where they look like clowns, though. They lost me there.

Taylor's value to Richardson? I say it's INvaluable. Mentally it would be a boost to AR. A running back like JT would make the rookie quarterback feel like he doesn't have to do it all himself. As far as Xs and Os, it's easier on a QB, especially a rookie, to have only one deep safety to worry about instead of two. Taylor forces a defense to play eight in the box.

If you don't want Taylor, the colts should trade him for the best offer!

I would say there’s a huge difference in not paying Taylor a mega deal and “what the Colts are doing.”

Yeah, that’s the second part of the post.

I mean even beyond the media circus issue. Seeking insane trades, burning bridges with him by threatening to falsely put him on IR, just generally treating him poorly to his face, etc.

All of it, until recently (I think the pup lidt might be like an olive branch) is like the worst possible series of decisions you could have made in the situation imo.

Seeking an insane trade is wrong? If they don’t want to trade him, why would they accept something less?

Irsay and the FO’s need to look like the “guys in charge” in the media is the root of all this. Opting not to trade JT, asking for a huge return (effectively not trading him), there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. They even did him a favor by putting him on PUP. It’s just the clown show that they created.
