Trojan
How you going to pay 5y/87mil to Terrence Steele but be mad at 2y/37mil to Zach Martin and drag him through a holdout?

He was atrocious in his first year starting, but he has worked his butt off to improve since then. He is a great complement to Zack on the right side, especially in run blocking. He was significantly better at RT last year than Tyron Smith, who replaced him due to injury after Tyron came back from his own injury. My only concern on this contract is the injury I just mentioned: a torn ACL. They paid Gallup coming off an ACL last year too, and it hasn’t worked out well so far. Obviously, Gallup could still turn it around. They rave about Steele’s work ethic, so I’m guessing he’ll bounce back just fine.

minutemancl
Apparently no one has watched Steele. He's probably a top 5 RT in football and made insane jumps/progress the last few years.

But it does feel like a contract that assumes that improvement continues. People love to assume young players only ever get better, but that's 100% not the reality of it. But more importantly, it just feels weird from a resource allocation perspective given the Cowboys roster. Good player, but he's what, the 8th or 9th most important starter on the Cowboys? On a team with relatively little cap space and cap flexibility next offseason. To me this just feels like the kind of player you let someone else throw money at moreso than a centerpiece to the roster that Dallas really needed to extend early. The opportunity cost is relevant at that point, IMO. And he's coming off an injury, as well.

Dak’s cap hit is 59.5mil alone next year and it’s a contract year; plus he already has a cap hit of 25.5mil in 2025 for a void year. They also have Pollard, Lamb, and Parsons needing new deals.
