He still has the highest total guaranteed money of any QB extension.

Even before acknowledging the serial rapist part of the equation, it's an outlier in the market and a terrible deal that deserves to be made fun of.

I have zero qualms with him being paid or even being the highest paid. 

However, the absurd narrative that a bunch of Cincinnati fans spewed about him taking a team friendly deal/hometown discount deserves to be called out for what it was: absolute nonsense.

I'll admit anyone was a fool to believe he wasn't going to top the most recent contract and reset the market. But I guess it also depends on your definition of "team friendly". Was he going to go the late-stage Brady route and take less than market value? No. Could Burrow have demanded more than a measly $2.5 million (AAV) and $1.1 guaranteed than the contract Herbert just signed? Without question, especially if exposed to the open market. So is that a little friendly? Maybe? Probably not. 

Also, there's reason to believe such things when you hear things like this in the offseason directly from the source:

We agree here that this isn't Burrow giving a discount, but that is what people mean when they say "team friendly deal". Yes, he could have gotten more on the open market, but he would have had to play out those years to get there and already has had a major injury. He gains significant guarantees that are in his interest by signing a deal today.

Giving a quote about how you care about the salary cap is part of the standard PR that comes with signing a mega-deal. That should count for absolutely nothing.

Also, Bengals fans shouldn't want Joe Burrow to give up a discount for them. I realize it's tempting in the moment, but when an important player takes a discount like that, they might not have direct authority about how the money is spent, but their opinion is going to be considered way more and players make horrible GMs.

Everyone is excited about LeBron the player giving the team a discount until they realize that means LeBron is the new GM.
