Who do you want as the Steelers new Offensive Coordinator?

Smith is going to bring back the PA back to Pittsburgh. I'm going to have orgasms when we run a PA and complete a 20-25 yard pass to wide open receiver multiple times a game

Atlanta was 8th in motion at the snap, 8th in RPO plays run, and 4th in PA plays run last year.

For comparison:

Pittsburgh was 15th, 22nd, and 30th.

It's like a "do what we were good at, but make it better" thing.

I don't hate it. Like everyone else I would've liked to see them turn over a lot more stones before making the decision.

Alex Kazora had a pretty good comment "He is whelmed, with the hire" (Not over or under)

I'd say this...The Senior Bowl practice week is a HUGE event that I don't think many fans totally grasp its significance in value in not just seeing and studying players but interacting with the NFL community of coaches, scouts and GMs. At least I value it that much, and understood that from my experiences there, and I think teams like to get things in place so that they can focus and study more closely on what the chef they have cooking, needs to cook.

I do think Arthur Smith is/was a commodity that somebody would hire here eventually in this hiring cycle, especially with the Washington & Seattle HC jobs still open and those HCs will need to fill their staffs. Ben Johnson removing himself from the list kind of puts a shine back on Vrabel as a possibility for one of these jobs.

As for what I think is good about the hire. An extreme value in the offensive line, the running game and something this team has been lacking for years Play Action Passing.  At the beginning of the season there was no doubt that Atlanta had a great assembly of Olineman especially geared to the run game. What I am and was looking for in an offense was an offense that values the run to complement the defense and can take over and demoralize defenses so that they keep the Steelers identity which Im certain aligns with Art Rooneys core beliefs as necessary for the Steelers, and similarly plays into what Mike Tomlins defense and game philosophies need. At the same time get an offense that is able to create things off of that run game that opens up the passing game. Perhaps Smith can still bring in a qb guy or one of the assistants from the SF/ LA/GB or HOU staffs to interject some more of those ideas.

This also makes me think that a WR like Xavier Leggette (who intrigues me a lot ) would be appealing to Smith, but Im finding more and more WRs that can be had in the 3rd & 4th rounds that would be significantly more useful than Austin for this team.

I hope it means Munchak is coming too...

Both Tomlin and Rooney seemed to back Kenny as QB1 and both talked about the necessity of growth/big year from him in 24.

But they need to take a pretty good swing at a QB coach with Smith as the OC. As Jon points out, he isn't a tremendous fit for how Kenny has played (which isn't necessarily a bad thing because Kenny has been...bad), but also doesn't have any track record of QB growth (not even saying he can't do it, the track record simply doesn't exist).

He started on the defensive side of the ball, moved to O-Line and TEs then to OC. QB coach is an extremely important hire here. If they nail one I'll be more happy with Smith. If they also have a "Passing specialist/coordinator" carve out, I'd be thrilled.

Just so genuinely disappointed that they made a hire after 3 interviews.

I am really hoping that they at least talked to more than three people. They missed some opportunities to gather information.

So much lost opportunity not only to make sure you are making the best hire, but also to get the chance to talk to people about your team, offense in general, and (most importantly) about other people around the league.

Exactly! 100%

For a team that has a painfully small network to draw from, that's such a huge swing and a miss.

Just kinda bummed...

I am hoping they have information that hasn't come to light. I.E. The guy or guys they were interested in maybe were not as interested. I dunno.

I’ll second that this hire feels a lot better  if Munchak comes with him.

Definitely. Getting him back would be awesome.  Despite not being new age, he would definitely still bring back a good tough steel city football culture.

Also, maybe my expectations were lower than others, but if Kenny can play as well as Tannehill under Smith that’s better than I thought he could be.

I am not as down on Kenny as many here. I think he needs support that he didn't get consistently. Everyone wase expecting him to carry the offense and he was not ready for that yet. Still is not today, but I hope/believe that he can.

Now if you are in the school of thought a Kubiak could make Kenny the next Purdy I get the disappointment.

I think Kubiak could make Kenny the best version of Kenny. Kenny doesn't have to be fleet of foot from getting up-field, but learn how to move in the pocket to create windows and extend plays before taking off. He definitely regressed in terms of pocket comfort.

Having a solid rushing attack should help that tremendously. Also being able to take snaps under ceter and doing some things. Should help Najee and Jalen if they can get a FB in at times and have Najee and Jalen in together. Lots of options.

Too early to say, but just somewhat surprised it came as soon as it did. I definitely didn't see this coming.

That's probably my biggest disappointment. I thought that they would treat this as they did the GM search. Blame the Lions for losing because they probably would have at least got to talk to Kubiak. 😉

Least I value it that much and understood that from my experiences there and I think teams like to get things in place so that they can focus and study more closely on what the chef they have cooking, needs to cook.

Everyone has their own ideas on how to get the Steelers offense and players cooking. 🤔😉

I agree. I just wish that teams would open up to give more new guys an opportunity to become HC's. There are a lot of retreads. Not implying that  about Vrabel, but often new innovative guys don't always get a fair shot.

As for what I think is good about the hire. An extreme value in the offensive line, the running game and something this team has been lacking for years Play Action Passing.

This has been discussed many times here and pointed out as to why the Steelers didn't utilize this more. In particular when they started running well.

At the beginning of the season there was no doubt that Atlanta had a great assembly of Olineman especially geared to the run game. What I am and was looking for in an offense was an offense that values the run to complement the defense

Huge need here because the defense was generally put in peril and didn't get to play with a lead or stay off the field so much. Not many people look at that when they consider the injuries on defense. Oftentimes those guys were on the field far too often.

You have Najee and Warren, add a dominant OT and Center and you can ground and pound or play action teams to death. It will also open up the passing game with our threats outside. It all starts up front on the OL.

and can take over and demoralize defenses so that they keep the Steelers identity which Im certain aligns with Art Rooneys core beliefs as necessary for the Steelers, and similarly plays into what Mike Tomlins defense and game philosophies need.

You said it.

At the same time get an offense that is able to create things off of that run game that opens up the passing game. Perhaps Smith can still bring in a qb guy or one of the assistants from the SF/ LA/GB or HOU staffs to interject some more of those ideas.

They need someone who can get Kenny's confidence back or help take Mason or whoever the QB is to the next level. Having a strong OL goes a long way. Then having the brains behind that to build upon a passing attack with Pickens, Johnson, and Austin.

This also makes me think that a WR like Xavier Leggette (who intrigues me a lot ) would be appealing to Smith, but I'm finding more and more WRs that can be had in the 3rd & 4th rounds that would be significantly more useful than Austin for this team.

I don't think that they utilized Austin enough. He is certainly not a polished receiver, but he has talents that the team didn't utilize.  We do still need another WR.

Mark Madden seems to be getting a bunch of things right, which is worrisome given his overall pessimism. I too think they should have interviewed Kubiak and considered a change that is beyond just doing the same things better. Well well, can’t dwell. If we change the oline coach and 40 percent of the oline, I’ll be happy.

Thomas Brown as Head assistant coach/passing game coordinator

Smith as OC

Jerrod Johnson as QB coach

that would be a sweeping change in the coaching staff that we've been begging for imo good mix of experience and fresh ideas.

Kenny is going to need to connect some dots on offense. He will be given support, but will need to grow and move forward.

Agreed!

As Jon points out, he isn't a tremendous fit for how Kenny has played (which isn't necessarily a bad thing because Kenny has been...bad),

Kenny went 6-4 last year and 7-3 this year in games he started and finished. The style points were not always pretty, but he has been okay for what he had to work with. Kenny should not have had an expectation of leading the team in those two years.

but also doesn't have any track record of QB growth (not even saying he can't do it, the track record simply doesn't exist).

Expectations should be realistic for Kenny. People see others success and expect the same things. He regressed in areas, but the team also didn't help him in many games.

He started on the defensive side of the ball, moved to O-Line and TEs then to OC. QB coach is an extremely important hire here. If they nail one I'll be more happy with Smith. If they also have a "Passing specialist/coordinator" carve out, I'd be thrilled.

Me too! That is moving this organization forward as well. Expand the coaching staff!

I know a QB who is really good at PA passes. He loves throwing to TEs too. He also has a strong enough arm to get the ball vertical to our talented WR core. How would Justin Fields look in this style of offense?

Arthur Smith had a prime opportunity to draft Fields when Atlanta needed a QB badly and he passed so that should tell you how he feels about Fields fit in his offense. Not saying that I agree or disagree but there’s your context clue.
